Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Kelly and Christal Katapodis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Beth and Christal. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are two heart-centered, out-of-the box therapists who provide a holistic, integrated approach of the mind and body; promoting optimal growth and development. We strive to help individuals better manage their emotions, communicate effectively, engage with others in the world and participate in everyday life activities at their greatest potential.
It all began within the four walls of a neurology clinic, where an OT and ST followed their individual desires to refine their crafts and therapeutic specialties. Once we connected our natural strengths and professional lenses to co-treat within creative avenues (e.g., rock climbing, paddle boarding, gymnastics), we saw increased motivation, family participation and client progress. Magic happened and we haven’t looked back since! This is what led us to starting JoyRide Therapeutic Adventures. JoyRide officially became a company in late February of 2020.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have certainly hit some bumps in the road during this global pandemic, but no more than anyone else in the world right now. Aside from the current state of the country, we have had so much support and encouragement from our families, colleagues, clients, and friends to continue bringing JoyRide to life.
JoyRide Therapeutic Adventures – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our mission is to support individuals with neurological, sensory, motor and communication differences to find their unique inner joy. We do this by creating a therapeutic framework through the lens of an occupational therapist and speech-language pathologist, within the home, real world, and outdoor adventure settings to achieve individualized client and family informed goals, generalize learned skills, and foster independence.
Our unique approach was brought to life through a deep understanding of neurological foundations related to child development, with over ten years combined evidenced-based practice specific to the fields of occupational therapy and speech-language therapy, and most importantly a yearning desire within the hearts of two therapists to serve individuals experiencing sensory, motor, and communication differences in a non-traditional fashion.
We look at each individual through a holistic, integrative lens emphasizing the mind-body connection in order to promote optimal growth and development no matter what age, early intervention into young adulthood. Our therapeutic approach places a strong emphasis on building sensory and motor pathways in the brain in order to help an individual access and demonstrate higher level cognitive and communication skills. As human beings we all have neurological differences, and each of us are equipped with our own individual set of strengths and weaknesses. We discover and develop these skills in how we access and explore our environment, creating the narrative of “who we are” in the world.
We believe that every person with “differences” deserves the same platform to discover this, just as a neurotypical individual is organically provided with these experiences. Connecting someone to their specific strengths, interests and passions will provide them with an outlet to enhance sensory, motor, communication and social emotional skills in a holistic, meaningful and natural way.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We are firm believers in fate and putting all our of faith into what we believe in. We both took a big leap of faith to leave our previous jobs at an established medical clinic with a consistent paycheck. We knew we had to take action on making our dreams and purpose in life come true. Aside from all the fears and unknowns about starting a business from the ground up we knew it was the right choice for us. Some might call it “luck”, others might say “blessings”, “hardwork” or “destiny”, but whatever it maybe we sure are thankful for taking that leap. We have all of the families we serve, our friends, our colleagues and the local San Diego community to thank for it. We are excited to see where JoyRide takes us next.
