Meet Bethany Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Jones.

Bethany, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My father is a disabled person with severe arthritis. For years my brother bought me and the family Comic-con t-shirts. He bought my dad them as souvenirs even though I could not put them on because his shoulders were so bad he could not lift them. Later my dad came up with the idea to put colorful zippers on them so he could wear them. In 20017 my father was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. During treatment at Sharp Grossmont, he wore those shirts. The radiation staff suggested that he make them because they were cool. I had no interest until a fellow cancer patient of my father’s, “Scarlett “urged me. She and the staff were insistent on their beauty and the benefit to many other patients. I realized this could also give some local artist. I knew the chance to show their work. Hence Zippitee was born.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Today we make shirts hoping to improve the lives of those with disabilities and to start a new shirt trend, one that works for everyone. We have art on our shirts from local unknown San Diego artist.

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
We haven’t sold many shirts because we are still unknown and not many people know our story. My suggestion is to keep on keeping on. Things like this take time. I do this because I want to help people.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
They can see and buy our shirts on our website https://www.zippiteeshirts.com/ or our Instagram https://www.instagram.com/zippitee/?hl=en
