Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Dill.
Hi Beverly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Southeast San Diego with a very traditional middle-class upbringing. My parents raised my brother and me from their southern roots; they were both born and raised in rural Louisiana and raised us to value hard work, discipline, and faith.
My father was the consummate hard-working, no-nonsense, no-fuss, bread-winner. My mother was the nurturing and devoted mom who was and still is always there for my family. My father would ask us what we needed and would then set about the means and a plan to provide it, and my mother would balance that by telling us, “we didn’t need it”.
I straddled this space between doing whatever it takes to build the foundation of talent, tools, skillset, and ambition with the practical approach to life. I was raised to understand that if I could develop the experience that was valued and needed by others, I would always have a place in the job market and a solid career. I decided from an early age that I would become an accountant because everyone needs a good accountant with attention to detail. It was a pursuit that was both sound and practical.
Let’s spring forward… I graduated from college with, you guessed it, a degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting. I worked for a Fortune 500 company right out of college. I obtained a master’s degree in business administration 4 years later and met my husband three years after that. We started our family right away.
During maternity leave with my first of two, I had a chance to step back from the challenging demands of corporate life and reflect. What I noticed during this time was that I wanted more. Family life was great, but I felt I needed a change. I was eager to make the move from the corporate scene to the public accounting firm world, where client luncheons, travel, and large bonuses are part of an energetic, fast-paced career path. I accepted an offer to go to work for one of the Big Four public accounting firms. Life was good.
As exciting a path as my new professional journey was taking, my personal journey was taking shape as well. I was a new mother, my priorities were changing, and the path I was on was no longer one that I felt the same passion and desire for. I went through a period of soul searching, longing for meaning and purpose. I began to realize that I never really had a passion and desire for the career I had spent my adult life pursuing. I began to question everything. Was I living out my purpose? Was there more that God had called me to?
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After a few years of working for a Big Four public accounting firm, I decided to go back to the corporate scene when my husband and I decided to have our second child. Corporate work hours are a little more manageable compared to public accounting work hours. A couple of years passed and life became stressful because I was struggling to find my place in the corporate world. It was challenging to know that I wanted to do more, but I didn’t know what that looked like. I started reading and engaging in activities that I enjoyed. From there, I discovered yoga and meditation, because I was looking for something that would relieve my stress.
Also, I began to explore journaling, because I read it was therapeutic as well. I continued to explore opportunities that brought joy to my life. Journaling opened up so much for me that I wanted to start a business that sold journals. I took the leap and started my company, True Sentiments in 2018 offering journals.
It became challenging to work full-time and start my business. I realized that I needed help with transitioning from a mindset of working for someone else to working for myself.
I was moving deeper into self-discovery and found the process fascinating. I met with a holistic practitioner that specialized in ThetaHealing. I had no idea what to expect, but I was open to it. The experience was life-changing. So much so that I wanted to help others find their way towards what brought joy to their lives and my own. I wanted to blend my personal experience with certified knowledge. Now, I am certified in general meditation, mindfulness meditation, Neuro-linguistics Programming, and ThetaHealing. I am living out the principles that began those many years ago of building the foundation of talent, tools, skillset, and ambition with the practical approach to life. I am now fulfilling those principles with a higher sense of purpose. I left corporate life in the summer of 2019 and never looked back.
We’ve been impressed with True Sentiments, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I co-founded True Sentiments in October 2018 with my husband. The focal point of our mission is connection. Whether it is connecting with yourself or others around you, we believe that both are important for one’s overall wellbeing.
True Sentiments offers products and services that promote mindfulness with a cultural flavor. One of our flagship products is MyGratiBox Self-care Kit. This interactive kit contains a curated collection of elements that will help you better connect with yourself and the world around you through gratitude. MyGratiBox helps to build a gratitude experience that should flow to you and through you. There are items in the kit that you can use and we encourage you to share some of the contents with others. The kit includes an interactive component to this experience because we want to help you along your self-care journey.
The services that we offer incorporate my personal and professional experiences with my certifications. I offer live in-person (Eastlake, Chula Vista) and virtual mindfulness meditation sessions, and one-on-one sessions. Whether you want to just try it or you want to truly invest in your wellness journey, we got you covered. We offer monthly Wellness Program Memberships or Single Sessions.
What are your plans for the future?
My future plans include continuing to live my life with purpose and intention with family, friends, clients, and community. The next phase of growth and expansion for True Sentiments is beyond the virtual world into physical spaces like workshops and retreats. We are also excited about exploring the many opportunities that exist in the metaverse by using emerging technology platforms to expand and deepen the sensory experience of meditation.
