Meet Birgit Witherspoon of B Balanced in Bay Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Birgit Witherspoon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Birgit. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always had a knack for healing; it came naturally to me. As a kid and teenager, I focused on large animals and needless to say, I wanted to become a vet and specialize in horses. This dream was shattered by a large animal vet with whom I interned. He had the attitude that women had no business in the field and he showed me that I was physically not able to complete the tasks he gave me. Came to find out that he was just determined to deter me; the next horse vet I met a few years later was more petite than I am and assured me that the jobs the other vet gave me, were made up and never occurred in a large animal practice.

After many detours, I found joy in the field of Domestic Science/Health and after earning my Master’s Degree I worked for over a decade in management in food service. I could experiment with alternative and ethnic food choices and had fun observing how people changed through changing their eating habits. It made perfect sense to me, given that the food we put in our bodies is either nourishing or harming us.

From my education in Germany, my focus was on preventing and healing dis-ease with whole food nutrition. When I moved to the US I chose to immerse myself into the culture to quickly improve my English, understand the American way of life, and become proficient in my profession. After 3 years working for McDonald’s corporation, I was burned out and upset with the food industry focusing on profits while destroying peoples’ health.

I eventually went back to school and graduated as a Holistic Health Counselor from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City and opened b balanced in 2007. Since then, I have been studying with many alternative doctors who understand how vital nutrition is for well-being. Practicing Nutrition Response Testing for years, I was looking for a more fine-tuned approach to avoid having to make recommendations for bottles and bottles of supplements besides dietary and lifestyle changes, particularly for people who have a laundry list of symptoms.

I now combine Kinesiology (Muscle Testing), Blood Type Diet/Lifestyle and Emotional Trigger Removal and practice a minimalist approach. Considering bio-individuality is mandatory for my work. All sessions are customized based on appearing imbalances and my client’s needs. It is my greatest joy when my clients report feeling much better a lot sooner than they expected; it fuels my passion for helping them return to true well-being and great health.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been quite fortunate from the start. However, in 2010 I had a setback in the midst of a wonderful growth spurt. I had to have emergency surgery for a burst appendix that went undetected and it took me out completely for an entire month. The following month I could work just part time. Again, I consider myself fortunate; The doctors had predicted a totally different outcome and couldn’t believe how fast I recovered. Walking my talk certainly paid off.

I hit another rocky patch early in 2016 when I had to face breast cancer. It was really more of an emotional one and I decided to take the alternative route for treatment, which played out very well in a short amount of time.

Besides other -what I consider normal circumstances- it has been rather smooth sailing.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about B Balanced – what should we know?
B Balanced is about helping people return to true well-being naturally. My work is based in nutrition, more precisely Blood Type Diet, and customized to each individual I work with. The evaluation and analysis through kinesiology is elegant, non-invasive and accurate.

Nutritional imbalances are revealed and a program is designed to help the body heal itself, which is its natural ability, given it has the correct nutrients. Health coaching for dietary changes and other areas of life (where indicated), education and the release of emotional triggers round up a typical session.

My typical client is someone who has had long standing health issues, or simply has not felt well for a long time, and has tried many other approaches without satisfying results. At b balanced we don’t chase symptoms, we look to unveil underlying causes and finding the weakest link in a chain of imbalances.

Although my work is based on a certain diet, it doesn’t mean that all recommendations of that diet apply to all my clients. Bio-individuality is a huge factor in finding what the body requires to promote self-healing. Therefore, each client is unique and so are the designed programs.

I believe that the combination of modalities I practice makes the biggest difference not only for my clientele, but also when comparing b balanced to other companies and services.

My happiest moments are when a client reports feeling much better, seeing that smile on their face and hope in their eyes.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
There are a number to choose from, like being a good listener, providing a safe space for my clients where they can be themselves, making myself available outside office visits, and staying calm and centered when my clients are distressed. However, I believe that authenticity is the number one contributing factor to my success.
