Today we’d like to introduce you to Bita Hamidi.
Bita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Iran and immigrated to the U.S. at the time of the Iranian Revolution.
Having been born in a country which gives few rights to its citizens, I became very interested and enthralled with the U.S. system of government and particularly the U.S. Constitution.
After completing my Bachelor’s and Masters degree, I enrolled in Law School where I fell in love with the U.S Constitution and became an attorney in 1996. I initially practiced Criminal Law at a firm when I found my calling and switched my area of practice to Immigration, given my background.
I started my own solo practice in 2006 and have been helping Immigrants, mainly Iranians with their Immigration battles. In the past few years, this area of practice has become extremely difficult. Nonetheless, I find these are the times that attorneys can help the most
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. When I first moved to the United States although I spoke English fluently since it had been the first language I learned (my father attended college in Minnesota, and I learned to speak English before Farsi) I still did not completely fit in. I was only 13 years old, I left my parents and brothers in Iran to come live with my aunt in the U.S.
I lived through the hostage crisis and constant worrying about the safely of my family in Iran. These experiences I believe is what led me to become an attorney. I worked full-time while going to law school because my parents were unable to send money from Iran because of restrictions placed on the transfer of funds to the U.S. Working full-time and attending law school at the same time taught me a great deal about life and what one can accomplish if dedicated.
When I started my solo practice in 2006, I was not sure I would be able to make ends meet. I worked extra hard and took difficult cases and continued to build a client base. I continue to work hard to represent my clients today.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I have a solo law practice focusing on Immigration. My client base is largely Iranian, and I help with their immigration matters here in the U.S. such as Naturalization, applying for Permanent Residency and Asylum. My clients overseas are largely investors who invest in companies in the U.S. to obtain permanent residency here.
My brand is honesty! – I have built a reputation of being honest, giving my clients and potential clients the FULL story and advocating for them vigorously. If I think something can’t be done I let them know right away and will not take cases knowing a positive outcome is virtually impossible
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is fantastic for my type of business especially if wanting to practice with the Latino community. I don’t practice in that area, but because of the large population of foreigners, San Diego is an ideal location for Immigration practitioners.
