Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Shelton.
Hi Sheena, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The story of Black Fitness Excellence started from a gap I noticed and the faith to fill it. After working in fitness for a couple of years, I began to see how disconnected Black fitness professionals in San Diego were, and how often Black trainers and wellness professionals were overlooked, under-supported, or simply not given the spotlight they deserve. I created Black Fitness Excellence as a way to fill that gap, to celebrate us, connect us, and elevate the work we do in our communities.
My background is in social services and counseling, so I’ve always had a heart for people. As I transitioned into personal training under my brand, Bodied by Sheena, I realized my work wasn’t just about physical transformation. It was about healing, representation, and community building. Over time, I combined my skills in coaching, event planning, and leadership to create a platform that does more than highlight fitness, it cultivates legacy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but it’s been worth every obstacle. There have been seasons of uncertainty, especially when collaborations fell through or financial resources didn’t line up. I’ve had to make unexpected pivots and keep moving forward even when I didn’t know where the next opportunity or funding would come from.
One of the biggest personal challenges was pushing through imposter syndrome, questioning if I was “qualified” to lead something this big. But through it all, my faith kept me anchored. I’ve learned that walking in purpose doesn’t mean the road is clear or easy, it means trusting the vision even when you can’t see every step ahead.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Alongside leading Black Fitness Excellence, I run my own training brand, Bodied by Sheena, where I specialize in corrective exercise. My approach goes beyond workouts, it’s about restoring mobility, building confidence, and helping people show up stronger in every part of their lives, both physically and mentally.
I’m most proud of doing hard things, even when they don’t seem possible, and celebrating every small win along the way. Whether it’s launching a new event, helping someone heal from injury, or building a safe space for Black fitness leaders, I take pride in the progress, not just the outcome.
What sets me apart is the unique blend of my background: I bring over 20 years of experience in social services, counseling, and community building into both of my businesses. Being a Black female trainer and founder already puts me in rare company, but it’s my heart posture, strategy, and commitment to cultural impact that truly set me apart.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
At Black Fitness Excellence, we are always looking to expand our community of Black trainers, coaches, and wellness professionals, especially right here in San Diego. We’re also seeking local gyms and studios that are passionate about representation and would love to collaborate on future events, takeovers, or community activations.
Shout-out to my team who’ve believed in the vision and consistently contributed to the mission: Mo, Zey, Johnny, Mika, R’Ly, AK, Asia, Cynthia, and Tatyanna.
If you’re a gym owner or fitness leader interested in partnering with us, or a Black trainer looking for connection, visibility, and support, we’d love to hear from you.
