Today we’d like to introduce you to Blanca Janet Alvarez.
Blanca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been doing hair since high school. Not professionally but I had the brightest color you can think of. Being told at a young age that doing hair wasn’t a career, it was a hobby. I believe it for a long time till about my three years in college studying a subject I had no passion so I decided to drop out. A year later, I made the decision to take a risk attend cosmetology school.
Being 23, I was a bit older than everyone else but it made me work harder after graduating six months earlier than my class did. I assisted for about a year and a half and was a commission stylist a few years after that. Until I had my sweet baby boy in Jan 2019, I took another risk and knew it was time to become an independent stylist. Six months later, I found my home away from home. I started at tiger eye hair and never looked back. Working with some of the most supportive and inspiring team (family) I could ask for.
Has it been a smooth road?
Without struggle, there is no progress. I am a true believer of this quote. I definitely struggled going back to school after college. Living the broke busy life all over again but I made it through. Finally doing what I should of been doing since day one. Thankfully I have my amazing husband and family that got me through. After having my son in January, I decided to start my own business in April definitely was one of the most scariest and exciting things I’ve done. It was challenging figuring out what I needed and with little clientele. Also figuring motherhood all in one. Lots of sleepless nights but it’s shaped me to be business, mother, wife and friend I am today. I’ve surrounded myself with mentors and supportive people to get me through the daily struggles.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
San Diego native hairstylist who’s your confidant. I LOVE connecting with people. Building a relationship with a new client is one of my top priorities for my business. In my industry, we are so lucky that we’re able to connect. Giving confidence to people by creating a unique color and cut just for their needs. If they’re having a bad day offering a scalp massage to take stress away, it’s the details that make a difference. I’m in love with it all. All colors and cuts. From balayage, blonding, natural, color corrective and fantasy. What sets me apart is my passion to connect with people building a relationships and making those hair dreams come true. Seeing their smile and those selfies are my favorite.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego has some of the best food! We’re so diverse here. You can get the best Mexican food from a food truck to the yummiest Thai food. Not to mention coffee. Breweries are always a great place to catch up. Anytime people come visit balboa park is always a must. Solana beach when you want a chill beach day. Hiking on a Sunday is traditional with a follow-up brunch. The people are some of the coolest. San Diego is where people come and be their true selves. The parking sucks! Hahah but my parallel parking is perfection. Growing up here, I have to say how clean and beautiful it was. It saddens me to see how much trash I see on the freeway way alone. If we all try and pick up one piece of trash, anything will help.
