Meet BLK BOX Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to BLK BOX Performance.

Hello BLK BOX Performance, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Ryan and I (Desiree) Loza were products of the pandemic. Meaning we lost our jobs just like most of the world. It was absolutely devastating to not know how we could take care of our family. Lucky for us, we had a very large garage space available to us so we filled it with our gym equipment, only for ourselves at the time, we realized how important it was for our mental health at the time to keep working out, haha. Over time we started taking clients again and very quickly had to go on waitlists. We both knew we would not be going back to work at another gym because we wanted to be closer to our oldest son, Mason. Working at another gym meant being away from Mason for 10 hours in a day and we couldn’t do that again, staying at our newly created garage gym was the obvious choice. Some time had passed, and we decided to open classes on Saturdays. Very quickly… those also had waitlists. One day, Ryan and I were looking at our space that we had created, BLK BOX, filled with people, absolutely thriving… and we knew it was time to move into our own space. We both took out our laptops and searched for spaces. We ended up finding our dream space in Los Alamitos, which is only 2 miles from our old garage gym. Still in Covid times, scared and hopeful, we moved into our new space. We hit the ground RUNNING. Contacted as many people as possible to come see our new gym, made flyers, posted on every community page possible, created a hype that many people struggle with, and never stopped promoting US. We had 50 members signed up in the first week of opening. then 70 members… fast forward to today: we have 189 members signed up with us, Looking back on all of it… We realize how true it is that everything happens for a reason, and we would never change a single thing. We work hard for what we have, we put love and care into our members, we created a community who gives back, we have our family, we educate you so you can be proud of what you see in the mirror and we will never stop growing what we have created.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say it was haha.

Having to fund the entire gym just between Ryan and I. We did not have any help whatsoever- no loans, no partners, no donations, just our savings and credit cards. We made sure to have BLKBOX as presentable as possible from the first-day people walked through our doors. We are VERY proud of what we made!!!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
BLKBOX is a class-based gym located in Los Alamitos, CA.

We take a simple and functional approach to fitness. We take pride in educating our members on proper nutrition, proper form and giving them the confidence to be able to walk into a gym and not be scared while running back out.

BLKBOX is very much known for our programs and community. We have extensive 10–12-week strength programs which are lead by a coach every single class, we teach you how to lift heavy and how to be safe doing so. We also have cardio classes which people have the most fun in and leave here smiling, wanting MORE.

We are proud to be able to see so much success but more proud of giving BACK. We hold community events as often as we can and have donated to a few organizations that we believe in located also in Los Alamitos.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
Absolutely, but the RIGHT risk is worth the take.

We weighed our options, we knew BLKBOX was the right risk to take. We just didn’t know how it would pan out… but we wanted to see what our tenacity could create.

We could have gotten jobs at other gyms, made great money… had no over-head. That would have meant turning away from who we knew we could be and putting our family low on the priority list. that was something we couldn’t get ourselves to do. We wanted to take the opportunity of showing why everyone could love fitness the way we do and how to quiet all of the nonsense noise out there all while raising our family in a heathy environment. We saw it as our responsibility… That right there, made the risk worth it.
