Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Schuman.
Bobby, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After retiring from professional Baseball, I was searching for my next move. I had some down time while I was studying for my Series 7 and 66 securities licenses. Then while out surfing one day with some friends, the idea for Bob’s Lights was born. We started out by knocking on doors to assess the interest of potential clients in the area. If people did not seem interested, we were not going to pursue it. Now, in our third year, we do minimal marketing because almost all our clients come from word of mouth.
Has it been a smooth road?
Considering the combined IQ of myself and my two partners is barely in the triple digits, I’d say we are very happy with how our company has grown…lol. This is a business where you learn by making mistakes, and believe me, we learn more and more each year.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
While the idea was originally just to do seasonal lighting during the holidays, we expanded into doing events, weddings, parties, markets, trade shows, and even boats! During our first year in business, we caught the attention of Qualcomm, and we will now be the official decorator for their company Holiday party for the third year in a row. We could not be more proud and thankful to serve one of San Diego’s largest employers and one of the world’s most innovative companies. What sets us apart from other companies are our two Bret(t)s. Bret Schuman and Brett Volger. Bret and Brett are the two best lighting gurus this side of the Mississippi. We would not be successful without them. But if you happen to see them while they are decorating a home please approach with caution. They scare easily and they may bite…
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is a perfect city for hanging Christmas lights. It never gets too cold and rarely rains which makes it easy to bear the weather during the holiday season. We also believe there are large markets in cities where it gets very cold or where it snows. We find that in those circumstances people may be less inclined to decorate their homes for Christmas due to the cold weather and would be more willing to pay someone else to do it.
