Meet Braden Drake of Braden Drake Law in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Braden Drake.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Indiana and went to Indiana University where I graduated with one major in Slavic Language and Literature and another in political science. After deciding to pursue law, I explored my options, and ultimately, decided I would be happiest in San Diego (who isn’t?). I went to California Western School of Law where I found a passion for tax and business law. I took and passed the July 2016 bar exam and then went on to complete the University of San Diego Law’s LLM program in taxation.

I decided mid-way through law school, that I wanted to start my own law firm. I interned in a large law office. It wasn’t for me. After meeting solo attorneys who seemed much more enthusiastic about their day-to-day, I decided, I wanted to do whatever I could to have that enthusiasm for my work as well.

After finishing the USD program, I joined a solo-practice program through California Western. Those who get accepted into the program go through a two-week training program on running a solo practice. You then share workspace with your fellow participants. Being a part of that program gave me the confidence to go it alone.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a bit bumpy. It took me a while to narrow down my scope of services and determine my “ideal client avatar.” I primarily do small business law including tax, trademark, contracts, and entity formation. Entrepreneurship is a high risk, high reward scenario. I’m starting to see the rewards and am excited for my business to continue to grow.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is Braden Drake Law. My goal is to provide personalized legal solutions for individuals and small owners who have specific goals, so that they may focus their tie and energy on their true passions. My background and education in tax law are what sets me apart from other small business lawyers, as I am able to provide tax advice and planning in addition to the other standard legal business services such as, contract drafting and review, trademarks, employment issues, and business entity formations.

I’m also currently working on a project with two colleagues called Small Business Start-Up Guide (check us out on Instagram @startupguide.biz). The guide is a 5 phase, no-fuss, 100+ page e(work)book that helps new entrepreneurs navigate the small business planning, legal and branding process. I am co-authoring the guide along with Michelle from MKW Graphics and Lauren from Right Hand Business Coach, also pictured.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is a relatively large city with a tight-knit and ever-growing small business community. This makes for a great place to start a new business as there are many local resources available to new business owners including workshops, seminars, and networking groups.
