Meet Brett Stampf of Alta Brewing Company in Logan Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Stampf.

Brett, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started brewing beer commercially in 1995, worked in brewpubs in Baltimore and Michigan for 5 years then transitioned to production brewing, which included time with Stone, DogFish Head and Green Flash. After leaving Green Flash in 2011, I started consulting for some local brewery startups and wrote a business plan for Alta nearly 3 years ago.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our group has a unique background in that we have an architect, engineer and myself and others with construction backgrounds. That being said, every project has its own challenges, but this went as smooth as possible since we did our due diligence on the front end to hopefully eliminate time and capital consuming issues down the road. There were some issues that popped up, however that is typical and we have an advocate that works for the city of San Diego economic development department that provided immense help that expedited the process and saved money. I’d be happy to share war stories over a beer or two!

Alta Brewing Company – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Alta Brewing Company has a “Beer First” philosophy. We have been open for 5 months and are hopefully becoming known for good beer served in a cool environment. I’m proud that we are where we are at this point and am aware but not overly concerned with what other breweries are doing. Make good beer and have a goal. Come in, check us out and taste our beers…our customers decide what sets us apart from others.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
