Meet Brian Dez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Dez.

Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been the creative type. Anything that had to do with the arts – music, fashion, entertainment – I had to get my hands on. In middle school, I caught the acting/musical bug, always being involved with my school’s musical productions. Whether it was costume designing, background dancer or actor – I was always there. In high school, I continued my passion with it and expanding it to fashion and graphic design.

I knew I wanted to pursue a career in something that had to do being creative. I didn’t know how but once social media took a forefront – I knew I was home. Eventually, YouTube became my hobby. It’s not a stable income but I enjoy creating content that I know can make people happy. And that has always been my ultimate goal – to help people escape reality and smile – even if it’s only for five minutes.

Has it been a smooth road?
Having a YouTube channel or a social media presence is not easy. You constantly have to outdo yourself, have to think about what looks good on camera, what is “Instagram worthy” or if this is exciting for a video. Sometimes you have to work with what you have and that has been the case for me and I am sure for a lot of content creators.

I started making YouTube videos with an iPhone 5 and a free video editing app. I worked hard and saved my money in order to upgrade my equipment and even then, I felt the need to constantly continue to better myself. And even if you have the latest software or camera – there will always be a setback. Some of the struggles I had even with having a good quality camera was not having a good editing system. My laptop was old and I had to internet to upload my content. I had to use the public library or even Starbuck’s free wifi.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
As for my YouTube channel, I specialize in lifestyle content. Mostly consisting of daily/weekly vlogs, skincare related videos and a sprinkle of fashion and music. I think my channel sets me apart from other vloggers because I don’t focus too much on being so perfect. I don’t have the income to be setting up video shoots or splurging on travel just for a video. I try to be as real as possible. You’ll see my daily struggles, achievements and raw emotions.

I also like to think of myself as an Instagram curator. I love creating images that inspire and take my followers on a journey. Whether its a picture of a beautiful landscape, mouth-watering food flatlay or the occasional selfie (paired with a skincare caption). Showcasing images that make people want to explore and try new things. I also just started creating AR (augmented reality) filters on Instagram. It’s another way for me to let my creative juices flow.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I have been creating YouTube videos for about five years. When I started, it was a place of freedom, self-expression and hobby. Now, it is so saturated with people wanting to be famous and a career. I think that will always be the goal for many people getting into this industry.
