Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Mistretta.
Bryan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first opened Versatile Fitness five years ago out of a tiny studio in Clairemont. We started with very minimal equipment and worked diligently to create our group training model and take care of our few clients. Very slowly but surely, we began to develop our unique training structure in order to provide individual attention within a high-energy, group environment. We moved out of that studio 2.5 years later into our current Pacific Beach location and doubled our size! We train up to 30-40 people in our group classes, focusing on strength circuit training for any fitness level.
A year ago, an opportunity arose when the business next to us closed down overnight. It was another huge space, but I always wanted to take over the whole plaza, so I inquired and started spinning my wheels. I decided to take a leap of faith and create the VF spin off… literally. A month later, I opened VF revolution, which offers high-intensity cycling workouts along with functional strength circuits. We created a unique hybrid style workout incorporating different spin and strength combo workouts!
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely nothing about the road is or was smooth. It was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever set out to accomplish and I’m still not satisfied. Commercial lease space in San Diego is not cheap and the overhead to run this type of gym is pretty intense. Any mishaps or malfunctions and it makes keeping the gyms afloat very difficult.
Please tell us about VF Revolution.
We specialize in functional group training. We offer classes for any fitness level so you can get personal attention in a fun, group environment. We pride ourselves on making fitness fun, but constantly presenting a new challenge each day. Five years later and we’ve never had the same workout ever. We have developed such an amazing community of members who feel like family. The workouts are intense, but the camaraderie makes it so enjoyable. We also set up beach workouts, fundraising workouts and social events around San Diego. I believe it’s important to build relationships outside of the gym and also support the community whenever possible. Most of our members know that we are more than a gym. I take great pride in my discipline as a trainer, my genuine care for members’ well-being, and creating that family environment for all.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There is a big shift into virtual training. Making training as convenient as absolutely possible. Many big brands and companies have developed high-end tools for At-home training or training on the go. I believe the virtual platforms are great and they have their place, but you will never replicate the face to face training. There will never be a substitute for the energy in a group training class or the commands of a trainer in the room with you. Our gyms will compete with the virtual platforms but we aren’t going anywhere. I think the smart trainers will just do both 😉
