Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Palacios.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Palacios Design Co. started 10+ years ago as a bespoke design company specializing in rustic concepts utilizing recycled materials such as salvaged woods, steel, and glass works. Fine art was my study out of high school, and I began my journey as a large format abstract artist on canvas. Stretching and building my own canvas opened up the world of woodworking and carpentry, which quickly became another passion. Since then, being a San Diego native, surfing, music, and my creative peers have helped shape my craft into what it is today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Contract work can be intimidating, especially when you have lots on the line. But I have tried to balance my craft with small paying gigs when the projects haven’t been there in the past. I encourage young entrepreneurs to evaluate their lifestyles and expenses to be realistic. Business takes time, and healthy business takes lots of time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in a very personal design experience where a majority of my cliental are referred. I prefer a relationship with my customers. We meet, go over concepts together, visualize and communicate the final vision. This allows for a lasting appreciation into the design process, allowing the client to leave an impression on the installation.
What were you like growing up?
I was a pretty independent individual. I had a very adventurous upbringing being half Hispanic, and half whatever else you call American, experiencing life on both sides of the fence. I was a border child, a first generational creative looking to take a bite into something fun and exciting. I’ve surfed since the age of 10, and body surfed and enjoyed the water long before that. My father and older brother surfed, so it was inevitable. Surfing inspired me to travel.
By high school, I found myself more interested in things away from the typical high school experience. I wanted to go camping, to see live music, enjoy making art with my peers and went to art festivals and street fairs. Socializing and networking have brought me far, much farther than a formal fine art degree would have.
I’m thankful for supportive parents, turning their 2 car garage into an art studio and workshop. I owe them much. Small projects turned into medium-sized projects. Budgets slowly swelled. At the age of 30, I made the jump to an LLC and went full time a year ago. I haven’t looked back since.
