Meet Buddie Roots of Nazir Music Group in Lemon Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Buddie Roots.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Buddie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a soul pirate. I got to where I am today trusting and believing in the highest. It’s been a rocky road but I’ve been learning my lessons. If it wasn’t for the haters and the people who gave up on me and dropped me in would have never know what it means to persevere. If I didn’t have my support system I wouldn’t understand the mindset that giving up is not an option simply because there are people the music helps. At the end of the day, the purpose of this thing is to bring a higher consciousness to humanity and awaken their inner man.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A lot of the struggle that I deal with stem from this cali roots vibe. A lot of these guys look like proud boys or racist skinheads and they are the ones in control of the California reggae scene so much like the story of the black man in America so it has been my struggle as a reggae musician and artist.

Take for instance this year’s cali roots fest. All the bands were all appropriating reggae music. Up on stage cussing and talking about stuff that’s not promoting Jah and just a rock band trying to sabotage roots culture. So then when Steel pulse came to stage the vibe was different the sound was crucial and you could feel it in the atmosphere. Every song just about was about exposing racism and the movement against st it.

Kinda similar to how black jazz musicians in America were done wrong and got robbed of their culture. It’s a struggle out here as a black reggae artist in San Diego. It’s a lot of silent racism and a lot of haters here. You have to have tough skin, believe in yourself, and know your purpose why you are doing it and be determined to never give up. Otherwise. This thing will make you fold.

We’d love to hear more about your company.
Well as a company it’s just been me these past five years doing everything. Nazir Music Group is my vision to help truly talented individuals get the exposure and help they need to succeed in the music industry. But the focus no matter what the genre is always put the highest first. But I do it all, unfortunately. I produce all my songs from the start. I don’t start with a sample or even an idea. Every song I’ve made starts with me playing acoustic guitar. And from there I start to put the bass line then the drums and keys and things. Then by that time I have some words to go along so I record them. Then background vocals. Then I mix it and voila magic haha.

After that, I introduce the music to the band. Then we practice it and play it live. So I guess I’m kinda known for being Rootsie. The sound that I produce is what I have to kinda hold on to. Ain’t nobody producing this roots sound anymore. And that’s almost like anywhere. But I love the roots and I’m proud to still hold strong to the roots. With love and respect for all the roots legends, ya know. We can’t forget about jamaica and all the artists and Rastaman that suffered from this thing. Holding to the foundations of Rasta.

So I guess what sets me apart is that. None of these surfer rock bands are holding on to the traditional sound and movement of reggae. Reggae has always been advancing and moving forward but the message and the spirit have to be concrete. It cant be drinking and drugs and teaching the youth all these mixes up things. We have to liberate the youth. I’m proud to say that is the goal of Nazir Music Group.

What were you like growing up?
I was a musician haha. Kind in my world, I didn’t care about being in the in the crowd I just did me. Always was a musician. Interested in music girls of course. I ran track played football. I was good at school in just hated it so much because of the programming. I guess you can say I was a bit of a loner. And I still am today. I enjoy my family. Family is next under God.
