Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Martinez.
Carlos, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Although starting my first company was not the easiest task, it’s been absolutely worth it, and I’ve never been afraid to work hard and achieve my goals at all costs. At an early age, I always knew I wanted to create something different and to be a part of something bigger.
During high school, I was under the impression I’d eventually work under my dad. and inherit his real estate company. I thought I’d be able to utilize that opportunity to start something even bigger than myself although I didn’t know exactly what that would be at that age. However in 2008, my family was affected by the recession that hit the nation, and my Father was forced to sell our home, our vehicles, and his company. So I knew I had to start something with nothing.
With the guidance of my dad and a few mentors along the way, I was encouraged to learn something no one else knew and to be the absolute best at it. However, I would have to start at the very bottom. At the age of 17, I graduated college and began attending HVAC school at the institute of technology and pursued the controls aspect of the industry where I further educated myself with programmable logical controllers, direct digital controllers, and advanced troubleshooting. I furthered my experience when I began working at the age of 18 at the Hilton Gaslamp as an onsite HVAC technician.
At the age of 19 I was recruited by 1 of San Diego’s only five Diamond Hotels “The Grand Del Mar” where I not only advanced my knowledge but learned the highest level of etiquette and customer service. About a year later I was offered a position with Greater San Diego Air Conditioning as a lead commercial technician and couldn’t refuse the offer they were willing to pay me at that time. two years later I pursued my license as a specialty contractor at age 21.
Since then I launched my first company five Diamond Heating and Cooling Inc. and was inspired to name it after my experience working with the Grand Del Mar, to expand the five Diamond Experience to our community here in San Diego. Since then fve Diamond has defined me and my team. They say pressure can either burst pipes or create diamonds and I’ve hired some of the best technicians in all of San Diego to take on some of the biggest and most technical projects the county has encountered, including “Diamond Terrace” the first high rise in San Diego to be shut down after a cooling tower on their roof bursted and flooded an entire high rise with 150,000 gallons of water.
Although we’re trained to work in the HVAC commercial industry, we specialize most with our customer service and solutions. Now at the age of 26, I strive to continue to instill the five Diamond Experience through my team and my community here in San Diego
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth fighting for is ever easy, and I’ve used a lot of life lessons to help me get through every obstacle I encounter. For example like surfing, you can’t expect to ride a wave if you can’t get past it. When you feel like giving out is when you have to paddle and give it your all. That’s why whenever I’m confronted with a wall and I can’t find a way around it or over it, I will always find a way through it.
When I first started I received a lot of criticism, a lot of people tried discouraging me by saying everyone fails when they start a company, only 3% of companies in the nation succeed, what makes me thinks I’m different than the other 97%? Although I had no money to invest, no support, and all other odds against. I thrived off everyone’s criticism and proved to myself that I am different and found a way to get my company lifted off the ground.
I utilized one thing I did have, my time. I began educating myself through reading and studying different books on business and leadership. I invested in myself through my clothing, my lifestyle, and my associates surrounding myself around like-minded individuals every opportunity I could. To this day, life is still a fight but I continue to train to fight against all odds against me by bettering myself and my team. As it crazy as it sounds, it feels like I’m barely getting started and I look forward to creating an impact every day
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Five Diamond Heating and Cooling Inc. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company “five Diamond Heating and Cooling Inc” has developed quickly and had grown faster than we originally had anticipated when we realized there was a certain void in our field with the San Diego Sky Rises. Most companies are intimidated to work inside these buildings for several reasons.
The size of the buildings, the insurances involved in being able to work in these buildings, and the heavy machinery needing repair in these buildings. However, I was not only equipped to work on these buildings but was fascinated by them. I began searching for other like-minded individuals who were qualified to work in these buildings and began building my team from there. Some buildings we are now contracted with our two of the tallest residential high rises in San
Diego with Pacific Gate and Electra Towers overseeing the entire Bayfront. What also sets us apart is that we are not a blue-collar or white-collar company, we started the black collar movement where my techs represent our team by not only being project-oriented but client-oriented, by providing a luxury home service. Every member is clean-cut, with shirts tucked in, boots shined and they don’t swear. We esteem ourselves with the name five Diamond, and firmly believe we offer clients the highest level of value and service
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about this city and couldn’t be more blessed to live here, being originally born in Oceanside it’s been a huge privilege to see how this city has grown and developed as well. What I love most about this city, besides the ocean and climate is the overall mentality this community has. There’s so much opportunity here, and it’s great to see everyone take pride in contributing to the growth here. Whether it’s cleaning up at the ocean or helping others achieve their goals, this city has been so giving I feel it’s my obligation to give back.
If there is one thing I could do to help improve the city is the homeless situation and would want to be a resource eventually to help guide ones at an early age to pursue their highest potential rather than giving it up in the streets. Everyone’s situation is different but it’s important for one’s to know it doesn’t matter how we start just how we finish.
