Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Kuzi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I can remember, my life was all about translating my complex mind into fashion.
In order to get accepted to fashion design school, I made an OCD inspired bridal dress from white thin liners. The teachers weren’t so fond of it saying I’m not in the right occupation. So I decided to study psychology. After getting my master’s, I just wanted to touch fabrics again.
My mom, Carmela, was the only one that got me. She was my only true love, my safe place, my biggest inspiration. When she died from cancer two years ago, I couldn’t bear the thought of not enjoying her anymore. I promised myself I will do whatever it takes to spread her uniqueness, colores and craziness wherever I can and do only what I do best and enjoy it the most. I decided to quit my job and opened my shop.
Carmela. Because she was a brand that was never published.
My shop gives legitimization to be who you are, To choose differently, to choose quality, to choose love, and to feel great about it.
I believe in old school fabrics, handmade with love. I believe in one of a kind individuals and one of a kind items.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Two of my biggest fears all along were not to be able to support myself financially and even worse, that people won’t relate to my concept. The beginning was really tough, but I learned along the way that when you are passionate enough, not afraid of hard work, and go for the one thing that makes you happy, everything will fall into place.
Eventually, I found my amazing husband that supports me and my dream completely and volunteered to be the shop photographer. I moved to California to live next to the beach as I always wanted, and I appreciate every customer, excited about every new dress, and mostly enjoy my best decision ever.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
Carmela is a vintage shop. we are selling one of a kind designers boho style clothing, home decor, and accessories from the 1920s-1990s. I have been collecting vintage items for over twenty years. I always believed in handmade, old fashion fabrics, high quality, colorful and unique items.
Every item in the shop represents an old, good memory. You’re not only purchasing an item, but you are also purchasing a story. A statement.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moments I love the most, are when customers share their experiences with me. A week ago, one of my customers let me know that she’s going to be married wearing one of my dresses. It makes me so excited and proud.
Reading reviews, I feel ecstatic with their happiness. it means the world to me. I really don’t need anything more than that.
