Today we’d like to introduce you to Carroll Schumacher.
Hi Carroll, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started wrestling and martial arts when I was young. Boxing was included later when I was old enough to participate. Left South Dakota when I joined the Navy in 1975. Which brought me to San Diego. Opened my dojo after I got out of the Navy (Schu-Fu International Martial Arts Association) in 1979. In the mid 80’s Schu-Fu was recognized and sanctioned as an official form of martial arts. At the same time I had auditioned for Karate Kid 1. Got the roll and became hooked on the industry. Spent the next 20 years as an actor, stunt player and Assistant Director at Stu Segal Productions, working on the plethora of shows, movies of the week and films that were shot here in SD. During that time I developed an acting program called ” Physical Dialogue for Actor ” A specialized acting course designed for performers who need to execute physical action sequences safely and convincingly on stage or screen). In 2020 (pandemic related) I had to close the big brick and mortar dojo and relocate to a smaller dojo on my property. At this point I’m still teaching Schu-Fu, Physical Dialogue for Actors and continuing to work in the motion picture industry as an actor, stunt/fight coordinator and assistant director.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a blessed journey. However, there have been bumps along the way. Worked in the ship yards to support myself for number of years until the dojo made enough money for me to support me on my film journey.. Many sacrifices had to be made to keep the dojo running as well as building a career in the film industry.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

2). MY MARTIAL ARTS SYSTEM: SCHU-FU
Schu-Fu Martial Arts System is a highly pragmatic and accessible style of self-defense. Here’s a breakdown of its key principles:
Pragmatic and Realistic Approach: Schu-Fu is designed for practical, real-world self-defense. It’s not just about flashy moves or physical conditioning; it’s about what works when you need it most.
Accessibility for All: A core tenet of Schu-Fu is that martial arts training is for everyone, regardless of their physical attributes. It specifically states that you don’t need to be fast or limber, and that it’s designed to be effective even when you are sick or injured.
Leveraging an Opponent’s Energy: The system focuses on the “science” of using an attacker’s own energy, momentum, and balance against them. This removes the need for brute strength or physical size, making it a viable option for a wider range of practitioners. This focus on “controlling the balance points” is a central theme.
Comprehensive and Blended System: Schu-Fu is a synthesis of the most effective elements from a diverse array of martial arts, including Kenpo, Kung-Fu, Karate, Chin Na, Tai Chi, Aiki JuJutsu, Escrima, Wrestling, and Boxing. This blend suggests a well-rounded curriculum that covers striking, grappling, joint locks, and weapons-based concepts.
Situational Awareness and Proportional Response: The system emphasizes that not all self-defense situations are the same and teaches a variety of tactics based on the level of threat. This is a crucial and often overlooked aspect of martial arts training, promoting a proportional response to a threat rather than an automatic escalation to deadly force.
Officially Recognized Lineage: The sanctioning of Schu-Fu as American Kung-Fu by the Chinese International Martial Arts Association in 1985 gives the system official recognition and a clear lineage within the martial arts community.
3). FILM INDUSTRY:
Carroll Schumacher is an invaluable asset to any film production, bringing a unique blend of practical film experience and deep knowledge of physical movement.
His extensive background highlights several key areas of expertise:
· With over 35 years in the industry, including experience in stunts, acting, and as an assistant director, he has a comprehensive understanding of the entire filmmaking process. This allows him to bridge the gap between the director’s vision, the editor’s needs, and the actor’s physical performance. His “Stunt One Liners” and shot lists are a testament to this, as they help reduce the number of takes, shorten prep time, and minimize the risk of injury.
· Carroll’s background as a 10th-degree Black Belt and a martial arts instructor for 45 years gives him a deep understanding of body mechanics, timing, and action. He uses this knowledge to choreograph realistic and dynamic fight scenes, whether it’s a one-on-one skirmish or a large-scale battle. He excels at breaking down complex movement patterns into simple, understandable steps for all actors, from beginners to seasoned pros. This specialized skill ensures that every physical scene is not only visually compelling but also safe and efficient to shoot.
· Beyond large-scale action, Carroll also serves as a kinetic analyst or movement coach. He addresses the smaller, often overlooked physical details that can make or break a scene. He helps actors with everything from a smooth briefcase hand-off to a believable chase through a crowd. His goal is to empower actors, giving them the insight and confidence to perform difficult movements without getting “tangled, caught up or just flustered,” ensuring that the final shot looks effortless and professional.
Essentially, Carroll Schumacher is more than a stunt coordinator or a fight choreographer; he’s a physical performance specialist. He uses his diverse background to ensure that an actor’s physicality—whether it’s a simple hand-off or a complex fight scene—serves the story and looks authentic on camera.
