Meet Cashitta Morales and Rony Marrero of Moe Food SD in Imperial Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cashitta Morales and Rony Marrero.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I was a child, my mother Rony has been an amazing cook. I can remember always being in the kitchen watching and learning. Friends and family would always ask her to cook for special events and parties. As time went on, my mother and I would talk often about owning a restaurant one day. I (CiCi) moved to Utah at the end of 2019 and after working a crazy amount of overtime, I decided that I wanted to go back home to San Diego and invest the time I put into someone else’s business into a business of my own.

My mom being the supportive mother, she is welcomed me home with open arms. We decided together that 2020 was our time to believe in our talent and what we love to do. We decided to start with a catering business and work our way up to a restaurant. We are still very new to this, but happy and excited that we decided to take a leap of faith and follow our dream.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road from working for other companies and having no knowledge of what it takes to run a catering business has not been the easiest but has been full of rewards and new learning lessons. I would say like most people starting new business finances and knowing what you need as far as legalities have been the hardest part. With perseverance and support from one another, we’re making it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Moe Food SD story. Tell us more about the business.
My mom and I are proud black/Filipino women. We specialize in being a Filipino/Southern food catering business. We are most proud of the love and high-quality ingredients used in our food for affordable prices. What sets us apart is our diversity. Also, how we want to help others in our community start their own businesses and give to those going through hard times.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next few years, I feel the changes and trends will have a lot to do with people taking leaps of faith towards living their truth. I feel like more and more dreamers who have no knowledge owning a business will become interested in owning their own company. Ethnic food will become the new norm. More people will band together to help support small businesses.
