Meet Cassie Garrett of Normal Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Garrett.

Cassie Garrett

Hi Cassie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When we started our garden in 2014, our initial vision was to grow a few things like strawberries, lettuce, and tomatoes.

🌱We quickly realized that growing our own fruits and vegetables in containers, raised beds, plots, window sills, door steps, railings, etc…would keep us out of the produce section of any grocery store. It does for the most part, and we are constantly applying more succession measures to maintain this constant growth by harvesting and selling our own seeds 🌱

Our “motto” is to inspire you to:
~”Remember To Always Do Your Best Be Blissed And Grow/Make Something… Anything!!”~

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly it’s still a struggle trying to grow enough food. When we started our garden in 2014, our initial vision was to grow a few things that quickly changed to any and everything we could possibly grow hit or miss.

We always try encouraging folks to grow not just pretty flowers, but to grow food to be as self sustaining as possible.

There became a time when people would ask if we had enough food which is why we started harvesting and sharing our own seeds so they could see how easy it was to start their own garden in a small space.

Since then we have encouraged so many people and they have beautiful gardens right now!

We used to give in-person tours of the garden we affectionately named “The Garrett Cafe and Retreat” where we hosted people from around the country for a week of tranquil relaxation, meditation, fresh vegetables and homemade wines prior to the 2021 pandemic. It has definitely slowed down al lot, but we still have personal guest trickling in.

Were there any challenges?

Of course supply and demand.. we couldn’t grow fast enough for yours and our belly’s…lol. So we tried to utilized as much space as we could. Were getting older now so some space is now unused but we have enough for ourselves. We quickly learned that its easier to sell the seed than it is to sell the plant!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Whollylivin’ we specialize in making copper wrapped jewelry with crystals, beads etc or just plain ornamental Copper earrings necklaces, bracelets, rings and ear cuffs. We are also proud artists and, poets and have done so internationally.

We also enjoy makimg our own home grown Cannabis Tincture, Body Budda, Nasal Decongestant, Tumeric Tea Wine and more!

We are avid gardeners so we garden year round and we’re proud of all the activities we do. You could even go as far as to call us Jack’s of all trades!

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Yes! Content content content! You have to have your social media platforms these days.

Making videos, taking pictures and finding your niche is probably the best advice I can give. By having this platforms and making videos that helps get the word out obviously so you people can find out what you do and how what you do can benefit them.

The one thing we didn’t know when we started this was that we needed to learn how to edit.

Editing is probably one of the hardest things that we had to learn to do and still learning.

Maybe one day we’ll have someone that will edit for me we’ll see for now it’s all on me.

As I mentioned we’re getting older now so we’re not sure how long we’ll be able to do this wonderful work, but we enjoy it nonetheless!

Lastly,
Just be yourself share your knowledge and encourage people to do the same. We don’t do this for money per se, we do it because we enjoy it and it’s my passion that keeps us going.
I say we because I can’t do this by myself. I have a loving partner who helps me with everything!

Thank you so much for this opportunity to share our work!
