Meet Cath DeStefano of Human TuneUp in Pacific Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cath DeStefano.

Cath, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
On a lunch break from my job as an interviewer of welfare applicants, I was driving over the bridge in Mission Bay Park one summer day.

It was a soft-sun-ocean-breeze-no-clouds day and I did NOT want to go back to work! It was on that very day that I birthed a vision of having my own company. A company that would “finance the free time.”

Soon after I transferred to staff development and discovered what I loved to do and what I was good at: developing my fellow humans.

One fine July, with no business courses, little savings, but with a desire to be my own boss, I quit my job. Yikes.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not smooth. It’s rarely a straight line to a goal and this has been no exception.

The struggles include:

1) wearing all the hats in the beginning.

2) finding the work to do and being willing to keep finding the work to do.

3) keeping the cash flowing, and if not, having some believe-in-me friends and family to carry over the dips.

4) finding the oomph within to keep going during the dim times.

5) confidence enough to keep taking the necessary steps.

Human TuneUp – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What do I do? Two specialties mainly.

  1. In keynote speeches and in my series of dialogues and TuneUp workshops, I develop humans (i.e. as leaders worth following, as clear communicators and as employees skilled at customer care and life).
  2. On my website’s Company Store are products for working and living well, products that support new habits and products that help spread appreciation and love with our magical Heart Hoppers, FlipBooks and Vital Signs calendar.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is not, for me, financial and having a huge company.

Success is having enough money, health, surrounded with dear friends and family, influencing the course of humans’ lives while not overworking to death.
