Today we’d like to introduce you to Caylon Ellis.
Caylon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I honestly cannot recall what made me decide to go to massage school. I graduated from the University of California at Irvine just shy of a year and a half prior to starting massage school. Some life events sent me on a different journey than I was expecting. I definitely love learning about anything I can my hands on and I tend to do it in unconventional ways. I’m pretty sure I thought massage school would be a fun way to learn about the body and to help people if I ended up liking it.
While I was in massage school I was not planning on doing anything with it after I graduated. I decided to do the Associates Degree in Holistic Health program because I wanted to take every class the school offered. I was so adamant about not doing massage after school, I submitted a business plan that consisted of my practice being run on a pirate ship. Towards the end of my program, two things happened that shifted my intent somewhat.
One was a clinical research project that consisted of drafting a ten-session plan for a client with chronic pain. The other was volunteering at the veteran’s center in San Marcos. I met a veteran there who wanted to continue to see me after my volunteer hours were over because he felt like I was helping him. Nearly ten years later, he is still one of my clients I see weekly. Working with him is what kept me going with massage for many years.
At some point, I decided I really wanted to invest in learning more about the clinical aspects of orthopedic massage. Through some contacts I made in that arena, I was introduced to Neurokinetic Therapy and then Proprioceptive DeepTendon Reflex, the neurological techniques that brought me to where I am today.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to where I am now was circuitous, to say the least. I excelled in a traditional school setting that required a significant amount of memorization of information you are unlikely to actually apply on a regular basis. Learning information that needs to be applied and remembered was a challenging shift for me. I also did not realize until I was in massage school that I was pretty uncomfortable with people touching me.
Luckily I got over that relatively quickly. The transition into the neurological work that I do now was a huge adjustment that really blew up the world that I knew previously. It threw my confidence in my ability to help people for a loop, but fortunately, I had some wonderful clients who believed in me and supported me through those rocky times.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Caylon Ellis Therapeutics story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a classically trained massage therapist with an unconventional advanced education. My fundamental training from the International Professional School of Bodywork included a variety of all modalities, but my concentration was always on the therapeutic and clinical aspects of massage. The continued coursework I have immersed myself in for the past three years is on the neurological side of manual therapy. This work is what I’m most known for now.
Some of my clients call it “voodoo magic”, but it’s really just a form of manually applied functional neurology based on neuroscience. The advanced neurological and biomechanical techniques in my toolbox set me apart and allow me to identify and re-program compensation patterns around past and current injuries. If a joint or muscle is tight I can determine if there is a neurological component to the tension, correct it, and then proceed with effective soft tissue work.
My primary goal is to use all available methods to bring the body back to a neutral state in which a solid foundation can be re-established and built upon. I take pride in being able to pull from my entire growing toolbox to help people uncover why they have pain and how they can take an active role in keeping it from coming back.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?|
In the next five to ten years, I see my industry becoming a bigger part of health care. The trend I’ve seen over the past few years is that people come into my office because they want to get to the root cause of their pain. Many of my clients want to move beyond managing symptoms and are eager to learn how to take their health into their own hands. “Preventative care” is becoming more of a buzzword and I see that continuing to permeate my industry.
