Meet Cecelia Church of Vocabulary Boutique in Little Italy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecelia Church.

Cecelia has been styling in San Diego for ten years beginning her career styling costumes and props for the theater, then interiors and wardrobes. She realized her true passion was for styling individuals (a dream of hers as a child), she decided to open vocabulary boutique, where she thoroughly enjoys building relationships and helping her customers both explore and articulate their personal style with a sense of joy and self-confidence.

Has it been a smooth road?
Growth and expansion are challenging. I’ve gathered so many skills as an entrepreneur, but most recently am learning to allow others to participate with their strengths and mastery. More people coming to the table which means trusting and learning in a new way. Whether you call this letting go, asking for assistance, or raising money to fund expansion… It’s challenging while exciting.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Vocabulary Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
Vocabulary Boutique is a locally owned and operated business. Opened by Cecelia Church in 2009, Vocabulary is going on its eighth year of helping San Diegans and visitors alike articulate their personal style. We have trained stylists eager to create the perfect look with you. At Vocabulary, our mission is to spread joy. We love to do this by creating a fun and supportive environment in which you shop our playful chic collection. We offer an array of apparel, housewares and accessories, making us your local lifestyle resource! We pride ourselves in supporting local artisans. By doing so, we bring to you the best San Diego has to offer.

I’m proud to have beautiful relationships with long time clients. We are known for our selection being on point, especially with most pieces under $150.

We have excellent customer service because we all care genuinely about the lives of those we are assisting. Where they are going, what they are wearing and how they are feeling, how they are showing up in the world. We are here to help!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe retail is evolving primarily because of the internet. Brick n mortar stores are great for relationships while online shopping is good for anonymity. I am curious how the larger department stores will navigate the cultural shifts in buying. Smaller establishments like ours can work individually with our clients. We can do what they want, we can hear them and evolve more quickly. Corporations take much longer I think.
