Today we’d like to introduce you to Cedrice.
Cedrice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I listened to Christina Aguilera’s first album day in and day out with my Auntie Sonjie. Sonjie was the person in my life who challenged me to sing and perform on the spot. From ages eight through ten, she taught me to be comfortable with showcasing my talent in front of the camera. In middle school, I studied music and theatre at CPMA (Creative Performing Media Arts) for a year before I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called Alopecia Areata. My nails were brittle and my hair fell out in handfuls. Throughout my pre-teen years, I was severely bullied and outcasted by the other students. As I grew more comfortable with wearing wigs, I found my core group of friends and became more social and unafraid to be myself to an acceptable degree. During college, I always sang for my friends or in the shower, but I never thought I could make it a profession. In my early to mid-twenties, I started becoming more curious about myself as an adult. I questioned what I wanted to do for a living. I was studying communication in hopes of becoming a news anchor, but deep down, I knew I was not living with passion or purpose.
After making minimum wage and working two jobs I was fed up. I met a group of musicians named Abstrack who asked me to perform RnB, Soul, Jazz, and Hip Hop. When I got a taste of the artist lifestyle I knew I had found my match. I performed anywhere I could fit in from local open mics, house party jam sessions, coffee shops, farmer’s markets, etc. After two years of performing with Abstrack, we had written an album, performed for prominent venues in San Diego and toured to Vegas and Arizona. I would later venture into my acting career featuring as the lead role of a Spoken Word Opera, then, to New York for a political drama Off Broadway. The city of San Diego has been large supporters of my career and I am extremely grateful for them. While on this journey of truly finding my voice and myself, I was asked to speak for the TEDx San Diego conference about the illusive mystery of our identities. I am currently on a national tour called Love Thy Neighborhood sponsored by Jameson Whiskey in support of “Keep America Beautiful.” During this tour, I am writing my first solo project called: “The Honest Hour.” It will be a five track E.P inspired by my journey of growth into womanhood, my struggles as an artist, and my trials and errors of love.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, this road has been smooth. I have my manager, my band, and my gems to thank for that. My city has been incredibly supportive and uplifting, so I am always assured that I am on the right path. No matter, the struggles that I have been confronted with are mainly internal. Finding my identity as a woman, an artist, a songwriter, a friend, etc. These are the struggles that I believe everyone goes through and will continue to go through. The beauty of it is that I will never run out of stories to tell. My road will continue to expand as I expand into the world. My future is dictated by the choices I make, so as my identity shifts and changes so does my journey. Looking forward, I just have to trust my decisions and know that I am doing the right thing for me and my people and that can be heavy load causing the road to be slow.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into your story. Tell us more about the business.
What I “do” is write lyrics, sing, entertain, curate ideas for my team, act, and mentor my gems to pursue their aspirations. I am a vocalist, but I believe I truly specialize in figuring things out. I’m seeing that we are in a game of life and we’re all just trying to figure it out whatever “it” may be. This is what I understand to be the reason why my people enjoy my music and my performances. I think that I stand out because of my bald hairstyle, the sensual movements of my dance, the real emotion, and passion that exudes from my voice when I sing. I also truly have an interest in people, change, growth, and how they get through life and its trials.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck, as much, as I believe in myself and have faith in the process of the universe. I truly feel that music is my calling. I have the ability, talent and I have been fortunate to have some amazing opportunities. Music is truly where my to the affinity and passion is. I applied the time, the work, teamed with the right people of wisdom, let go of the wrong ones, and said no to opportunities that did not belong to me. It is through my gifts, faith, pure willingness, time, people, and hard work that has helped my life and business.
