Meet Chanya Punyakumpol of TAAN THAI

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanya Punyakumpol.

Hi Chanya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The idea for TAAN THAI came from the struggle of missing Thai holy basil in my fridge. Pad Kra Pao (Thai holy basil stir-fry) is my absolute favorite dish, and it’s readily available at nearly every street corner in Thailand. However, outside Thailand, fresh Thai holy basil is scarce, seasonal (available mostly in summer), and often sold in quantities too large to use before spoiling.

This inspired me to develop a convenient meal kit with everything needed to cook authentic Thai holy basil stir-fry, including the essential ingredient—Thai holy basil leaves. When I was in Bangkok, I experimented using dried Thai holy basil leaves, and the result was fantastic! Encouraged, I embarked on a journey I never imagined, searching for the right suppliers and manufacturers. One by one, I expanded the collection to include three additional classic Thai dishes, creating a complete line of must-try Thai meals – Tom Kha (Thai Coconut Soup), Pad Kra Pao (the most popular Thai street food style stir-fry), Khao Soi (Coconut Curry Noodles from the North of Thailand), and Thai Tea. During this exciting phase, two close friends joined me as business partners.

Recognizing the growing popularity of Thai food and the limited Thai options in the meal kit market, we believed that our vision for TAAN THAI could succeed. Our meal kits offer an easy and authentic way to cook Thai dishes at home, conveniently packing all necessary herbs and spices.
To fund our first batch and test market interest, we launched a Kickstarter campaign. Despite challenges, the overwhelming support from friends and family was incredible—they backed us personally, promoted our project, and shared free samples with their friends. Their encouragement helped us successfully reach our funding goal.

Thanks to our successful Kickstarter, TAAN THAI has grown into a full-fledged Thai meal kit brand. Entering the consumer-packaged food industry without prior experience was a steep learning curve, but, by trials and errors, we learned along the way. This summer, we are excited to showcase our products for the first time at the 2025 Summer Fancy Food Show in NYC, one of the largest CPG trade events in the US, on June 29th-July 1st!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every day brings new challenges in different forms. However, some struggles have stood out by teaching us valuable lessons. One key area has been working with suppliers, which is crucial for product development. Being a small business, we’ve encountered suppliers who overlook us, which can be disheartening. Yet, this experience has helped us identify and partner with true professionals who consistently deliver their best, regardless of business size. I view this as a blessing in disguise.

Operational issues also present frequent hurdles. Our struggles often revolve around the idea that “the devil is in the details.” For example, fluctuating logistical costs have taught us to optimize our packaging efficiently. Inventory management challenges have shown us the importance of placing advance orders rather than ordering too close to delivery dates, based on past mistakes.

Overall, I strive to view each challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow. While struggles are certainly not enjoyable, extracting valuable insights from these experiences helps me proactively prevent repeated setbacks in the future.

We’ve been impressed with TAAN THAI, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Resilience. This is the first word that comes to mind when I think about the question. Never giving up, even when things don’t go as planned or when I start losing faith in my vision. Despite setbacks, I keep moving forward, step by step, learning valuable lessons from each mistake. Every challenge eventually passes, making room for growth.

What truly sustains my resilience and belief in our vision is my family. The people around me believe in my dream as much as I do—sometimes even more. Their unwavering faith and constant encouragement inspire me to keep going, providing the courage I need to remain resilient.
