Meet Charla Afoa of Charla Afoa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charla Afoa.

Hi Charla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana with 2 sisters in a 2 parent home. I am the youngest of my sisters and there’s a good 9-10 year gap between us. Growing up I often felt a bit alone as everyone was so much older than me. My mother was pretty strict so I wasn’t able to leave the house much for leisure so I typically had to find ways to entertain myself. I wrote books, danced, sang, built paper houses, and played a lot of Super Mario Brothers (80’s baby!)! I found that even though I was alone, I always felt spiritual presences with me, especially when I slept. This used to cause me great anxiety and trouble sleeping. However, when I would sense spirits outside of the home I wasn’t afraid for some reason. I would go to elementary school and was often observed walking alone around the playground talking with grandparents that had past or spirit guides that looked like regular children to me. I had no fear at the time of being judged for what I was seeing and hearing so I would tell my friends at school and they would look at me like I was crazy. But I didn’t care….I loved this time of the day at school. It was so peaceful and I felt so much love. When I would return home though, this is where I would struggle with the presences I was feeling and I would share my experiences with others in my family but never felt better. It seemed that these spiritual events would just keep happening and I had to fend for myself on how to deal with it. It took decades for me to stop being afraid of what I was experiencing and realizing that it was a true gift to be able to be so sensitive and then even use this sensitivity to support others in such a fulfilling way. These spiritual giftings include being able to sense energies within others and within a space, strong intuition, premonitions, etc. When I was led by spirit to the right mentors and opportunities, I was able to refine these gifts and help so many people along my journey.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Mental illness was something I observed in my household quite a bit. From my younger perspective, much of what I observed seemed normal. I didn’t realize the anxiety I felt from what I was observing wasn’t normal or the sadness I would feel was due to not feeling seen. As I navigated challenging circumstance within my home, I often found refuge outside of my home with friends at school (when I wasn’t talking to the dead, lol). As time went on, I began to see similar behaviors outside of my home within other families and school dynamics that were, most of the time, worse then what I was experiencing. When I was in college, a couple of very traumatic events took place that changed my trajectory completely. I felt confused, hurt, and again, very alone. In this very difficult time, I decided that I was going to pour into my studies and leave the social scene on campus. I was in my dorm and I told myself, “I’m done….time to focus on my books and get the hell out of here”…and that is exactly what I did. I majored in Psychology and Criminal Justice and over the past couple of decades dedicated my career to understanding mental illness and how spirituality plays a role in that experience. As for school, I finished my undergrad strong and with genuine friendships that carried through to my adult life. I went on to get my Masters in Business Management and Marriage Family Therapy, as well as a Doctorate in Counseling psychology. I also have invested in my curiosities around spirituality and have consciously implemented so much of my learnings into my practice.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business has evolved over time where initially there was more of an emphasis on just doing traditional therapy with a sprinkle of spirituality offerings. It has been within the last couple of years that I have flipped that around and offer more spiritual services with a small hybrid of traditional talk therapy practices. What I currently do in my practice is I offer virtual hypnosis sessions, energy work (including mediumship and energy healing), dream interpretations, and EMDR. I am known for my intuitive ability to go to the core of someone’s need without needing much time to assess for it. If a client is open to what I have to offer, I can typically get a good read on what is best for their needs within a few sessions of assessment. What I love most about my brand is my ability to showcase that I am truly a human being. I offer transparency, authentic engagement, and nurturing support. People often say that they feel “so held” when working with me and experience relief after our sessions. I currently offer hypnosis packages that can be found on my website as well as energy work session with mediumship (the ability to communicate with past loved ones (including children that were miscarried or died at birth), even animals sometimes, and spiritual guides), dream interpretation is usually not a stand alone service but will be interweaved into the other services as needed, and EMDR ( I am a trained practitioner of EMDR), and as of late I am completing a certification in sex, love, and relationship coaching with an emphasis on Tantra that I also offer to clients.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel that much of my life circumstances have created a sense of humility within me around the human experience. I think success is remembering that we all have both light and dark within us…a balance. If I can practice respecting the balance both within me and others, success is inevitable.
