Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlene Corpus.
Charlene, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My life used to be “normal.” I went to college, had a career, friends, family, vacations, goals, an active social life, did all of the things you’re supposed to do. Then it happened – the Big Bad, a violent, abusive relationship that tried to break me and my “normal” life apart. No one believes it can happen to someone like me, but it does. Going through the legal process and justice system, I found myself just getting by, dying from a life of quiet desperation because I was trying to hold the tattered pieces of this life I didn’t even want together because it was all the life I had.
One day I stumbled upon the Angry Therapist, John Kim. I hadn’t heard of life-coaching and didn’t really like my therapist, but read John’s writing and immediately booked a life-coaching session with him. Two months of working with him several times a week and I had turned my life around. I was a completely different person, I was the person I didn’t know I always wanted to be. I stopped having sessions with John and off I went, free to go out into the world, spread my wings, and live my life as this new person.
Seeking a deep understanding of self to help deal with PTSD, I immersed myself in both scientifically-proven and spiritual healing modalities, as I discovered that the trauma was a catalyst for my Kundalini awakening and I was suddenly intuitive. A few years later, I felt compelled to come back, to learn to be a coach from John through the company he co-founded, JRNI. It wasn’t my intention to have a business or to find my purpose and calling, I just wanted to help people the way he helped me. I had lived the lifestyle for so long, where the work is done with John was integrated into who I was, that the curriculum was natural as breathing.
I take it a step further, coupling coaching with shamanism and energy healing, modalities found on my healing journey that I have a natural talent for. It is my calling to share these gifts, to be a beacon of light in the darkness, that others may be inspired to heal and find freedom through knowledge of self.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes and no. It’s been relatively smooth because of my background in business development and personal development – because as a small business owner, we are our business and our business reflects our personal “stuff” – but there’s always going to be challenges. My biggest challenges have been the need to be right and non-attachment, but that’s the challenge of a lifetime, so I’m good with that.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I believe we all walk a hero’s journey, that the challenges and obstacles in our lives are opportunities to learn and step into who we are apart from the conditioned personality, to become who we’re meant to be. I believe we all have a purpose and calling, with unique gifts were meant to share with the world, and the hero’s journey is meant for us to find them. My job is to be a guide, to help people find the tools and knowledge to change their destiny path.
As both a JRNI-certified life coach and natural-born shaman, I walk between the worlds, making the old ways modern by weaving together the sciences of positive psychology, neurobiology, and person-centered coaching, with the esoteric knowledge of shamanic healing, energy medicine (Reiki and Energy Mastery), meditation, and intuitive gifts. In my experience, it is only when we work with all parts of ourselves – mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual – that true transformation and healing are possible.
My work is uniquely suited to find the best solution for my clients, whether it’s a personal or professional issue. My focus with personal clients includes finding your purpose and calling; self-confidence and self-love; major life transitions; disorders such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety; generational trauma; dating and relationships. Clients bring whatever they have to the table. As a shaman, since I walk between the worlds, I also help clients with their spiritual issues, whether its a soul connection to an ex-lover to psychopomp work helping with spirits to space clearing and blessing.
With years in business development, as a business coach, I help clients develop the mindset, tactics, and foundational business skills to step into their calling with clarity and confidence. My business coaching is focused on heart-centered small business owners, as I believe business ownership is a form of personal development, meant to be used as a tool for social justice. You are your business, and you were meant to change the world.
Though one-on-one clients are my first love, I also do group coaching programs, shamanic meditation circles, and workshops on topics ranging from manifestation to compassionate communication to leadership development. I’m also a Studio Partner with Wanderlust and travel to events like their summer festivals and 108s.
I’m most proud of my clients; to help someone go from hopeless to hopeful is an honor and to hold the space for them to change themselves, their lives, and the world, is a privilege. To help make the world a better place, one person at a time – I’m incredibly blessed.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! If someone was starting out in coaching, I think San Diego would be a good place to start. Within the wellness community in San Diego, it would be great to see outreach and inclusivity of underserved communities who traditionally don’t have access to wellness and healing.
