Meet Chase Wilsey of Wilsey Asset Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chase Wilsey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My father, Brent Wilsey, has been in the finance industry for more than 40 years and started Wilsey Asset Management over 20 years ago. When I was a kid, I always looked up to my dad and wanted to be like him. I knew he was a businessman but wasn’t quite sure what he did exactly. This led me to start reading books about business when I was in middle school. I remember reading books about Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, and Paul Orfalea, the founder of Kinko’s. Brent never forced me into business, I just found an interest in the entrepreneurial mentality.

When I reached High School, I started working with Wilsey Asset Management and started to learn more about the investment world. I learned about the stock market by reading books from Warren Buffet and Benjamin Graham. I also learned about accounting by having my dad show me how to read financial statements such as the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement.

By the time I had reached college numbers came very easy to me and I enjoyed taking classes in all aspects of business, but finance and accounting remained my favorites. I ended with my Bachelors in Finance from Northern Arizona University and my MBA from Mississippi State.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been some difficulties along the way, but enjoying the business has helped make a bumpy road a lot smoother.

In business, there are the normal difficulties of time management with late nights and work on Saturdays, but that is a normal routine that must be overcome. Playing sports as a kid and playing football in college while doing part-time analysis work for Wilsey Asset Management helped prepare me for juggling the different challenges that become a part of the everyday business world.

Investing has had its own challenges. One motto we have at Wilsey Asset Management is that investing is simple, but it’s not easy. By this, we mean that the principle we have of buying good companies at low prices is simple, but the emotions that come along with investing can make it difficult. Major emotional events such as the Great Recession, Brexit, the recent election, and even market corrections take a major toll on most investors and that is why we spend a lot of time educating our clients about the principles of investing.

Wilsey Asset Management – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Today I work with my dad at one of the top Investment advising firms in San Diego. As an RIA firm, we work to provide advice as a fiduciary to both companies and individuals. Our firm manages over $220 million in assets and we provide our clients with a transparent approach to investing so they can truly understand what they actually own in their portfolio. We don’t have any hidden commissions and our money is invested through the same fundamental approach as all of our clients. Our philosophy is to buy good quality companies at low prices.

We specialize in the management of IRAs, company retirement plans, individual and joint accounts, and other investment accounts as well. We also have an unbiased financial planning branch that helps clients make the right financial decisions that are aligned with their deepest values and most important life goals.

We truly enjoy educating both our clients and the general public about proper investing. For our clients, we do this through quarterly events, where we discuss the economy, the investments in our portfolio, and even the personal holdings for Brent and myself. For the general public, we do a live radio show Saturday mornings on AM 760 KFMB, write weekly newsletters, produce Facebook posts about investing, and make TV appearances on the local news stations.

As a company, we are most proud of our team and the way we handle not just our client’s money but the relationships with them as well.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In this business success comes by the relationships we build with our clients. Our main goal is to provide them the retirement they desire. When I first started working with Brent, the most powerful story he told me was about a client that invested with him 35 years ago.

The client did not have much longer to live and he had requested that Brent came over to the house. He wanted to thank him for making him a millionaire through his saving and investing. Those are the stories that provide the feeling of success to our firm.
