Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Reed.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
A military transplant from Tennessee, I started tattooing in San Diego after leaving the Navy in 2010. I had always been involved in art since a teenager but never pursued it as a career until then. In the past I have worked in traditional mediums such as charcoal and acrylics creating anything from portraits to murals. For a few years I even created digital art in the video games industry using 3d modeling programs. These days I stick almost primarily to tattooing and tattoo related art.
Please tell us about your art.
To put it simply, I create tattoos. To look a little deeper, I create memories in the form of art for my clients that last a lifetime. Getting tattooed is a very personal experience that makes the message or meaning of each unique to the individual piece.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
As far as tattooing goes, San Diego has a lot of great tattoo artists and being tattooed seems to carry less of the stigma it did 20 to 30 years ago. Tattooing has also been undergoing a transformation in the last 20 years. More and more tattooers are coming from art related backgrounds. Much of the equipment we use today is different also. I guess you could say that technology is taking over the world of tattooing with more efficient machines and tools, better practices, and more education. So for a tattooer it may not be easier than it was in the past but it is more exciting and the possibilities are just growing with what we can do with our art and craft.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You are likely to see my work walking around anywhere. The other weekend at the Balboa Earth Day Fair I saw three people wearing tattoos I had done. That’s one of the great things about tattooing, your art travels and moves around. Unlike other art mediums that are static to a location, fixed to a wall or the side of a building.
I find that my clients support my artwork by either coming to me with a unique idea and allowing me to create something based on it or by just letting me do whatever I think works best. Those are the best pieces for me to create and I am lucky enough to have a lot of clients who let me do just that, create.
