Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Wright.
Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started one Christmas when my wife and I were first married and didn’t have very much money for Christmas gifts. I had recently started drawing Scripture as a way to help me memorize and meditate on God’s Word, So, I created a design to make prints to give out to friends and family for Christmas that year.
I started taking my designs and creating wallpapers for my computer and phone and began posting them online. Honestly, I didn’t know if anyone would ever even see the stuff I was putting out there, but I just thought if someone might stumble upon it, it might encourage them in their own memorization of Scripture.
Over time, people were finding and using the free resources and started to inquire about prints to put in their homes. All of a sudden, my personal project was turning into a small business. From there it slowly grew and we gradually began thinking of other products to create. But our goal is still the same: to create products with function and purpose to aid in the treasuring of God’s Word.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s been a lot of trial and error since this was our first time for pretty much everything related to starting and running a business. So much of it has been learning as we go! But, probably the greatest struggles at this point have to do with balancing all that goes into running our own business. I also do freelance design and we have two young children, so Scripture Type is really more of a side project. Because of that, we are constantly re-evaluating and re-prioritizing because there’s only so much time in a day. But, we love it and are so thankful for the opportunity to do this that it’s always worth it!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Scripture Type – what should we know?
Scripture Type specializes in creating thoughtfully crafted resources and goods for the treasuring of God’s Word. Each product we create has a lot of thought behind it. We not only want each one to look nice but also to have a practical, purposeful function. Often, a product idea is simply born out of an idea of something that we would like to have in our own home or will serve a specific purpose in our own treasuring of the Bible.
Almost everything in our shop is made in-house from start to finish. I do all of the woodworking and we also have a laser engraver that we use to put our designs on wood and other materials. It keeps us busy, but it ensures that everything we create and send out is unique and crafted with care and a personal touch.
The Scripture Type team is made up of my wife, Carly, and me (along with our 3 and 5-year-old daughters). I am the artist behind all of our designs and my wife, whose primary work experience was in office administration, helps keep things organized and helps with the customer service side of things. Our daughters…. well, they keep things fun and exciting and are always stoked to help out. We are truly just so amazed that we get to do this together as a family!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think humility is key. It’s so important at many different levels. It reminds us that what we’re doing is not just about us, but this business is a means of encouraging and helping others. It protects from comparing with all of the other businesses and designers that are more successful and talented than we are. It grounds us when life gets super crazy. If we let humility get away from us, everything we’re doing begins to lose its joy and foundation.
