Meet Christian Apolonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Apolonio.

Christian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2013, I spontaneously bought a Canon AE-1 film camera. I had no adequate knowledge of how to properly use a camera, let alone one that required film. Throughout the next year or two, I learned how to develop my own rolls of black and white film. I experienced trial and error on many rolls of film.I fell in love with photography, and the process of making a single moment in time come to life right before my eyes. I studied the great photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, who was a master of street/candid photography and Irving Penn who was known for his portraiture. After some time, I picked up a digital camera to expand my talents as a photographer. I started to work weddings, editorials, lifestyle, and family photos. This changed my whole perception of how I view the world. Today, I am continuing to hone my skills as a portraiture photographer.

Has it been a smooth road?
Throughout the last six years, I had moments where I didn’t enjoy what I was doing and had to take a step back. Every artist goes through burnout, and it’s important to realize it. After some time, I came back to it with more confidence and a clearer vision with what I want to see in my own work.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Christian Apolonio Photos story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in wedding and editorial photography.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I can see the photography industry continue to grow even more. Specifically in San Diego, there is an exponential growth in the art/photo community. There is so much talent here in San Diego, and I believe that in time, that talent will get the recognition that is due.  There are many opportunities for photographers and artists to learn from each other. I believe that regardless of your experience, it is important to always be a student of the game and to constantly learn from others around you. Look for inspiration outside of your craft and challenge yourself to look outside of what is normal. That mindset has taken the photo industry very far and will continue to do so.
