Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Owner of La Jolla Acne Specialists, I have been a licensed Esthetician and certified Acne Specialist since 2011. During this time, I have treated many skin conditions and issues ranging from acne to antiaging, skin sensitivities, sun damage, pigmentation, and rosacea. Despite performing a variety of treatments, I found myself experiencing a true connection, passion, and empathy for those with acne, having dealt with it myself and experiencing firsthand how debilitating it can be. Eight years ago, I made acne my sole focus and haven’t regretted a single day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m promise I’m not bragging, but from the day one, I was fortunate enough to have a full schedule! So many people suffer from acne ranging from adolescents to adults; I was really welcomed into the community with open arms as I could provide something that was lacking- a clinic whose only focus was to clear acne. The way I look at it, if you are suffering from a specific disease, you don’t see a generalized family doctor; you see a specialist who treats your condition, and only your condition, on a daily basis. Same with your skin. If you are suffering from acne, the best way to remedy your situation is to see an acne specialist such as myself.
That being said it hasn’t been an easy road. I have spent countless hours and an undisclosed amount of money on my continuing education. There’s so many new ingredients and products that emerge into the beauty world on a daily basis; it’s tough to keep up!
The only thing in the past 12 years which has negatively affected my business was Covid. What a horrific, destructive, turbulent event that was for us as humans, as well as the economy. I was fortunate enough to survive because people greatly need my services, but I would be lying if I said it didn’t have a measurable effect on my business. Covid continues to be a struggle as we all are still feeling the aftermath, but whenever I feel discouraged or reminisce about the “Good times,” I remind myself Covid was something completely out of my control and not associated with me personally whatsoever.

Since I am a business owner and entrepreneur, I would have to say I am most definitely a risk taker! You never know what the outcome will be, and many times we fail before we are successful. However, even when we are successful, there will still be unexpected obstacles along the way. I do truly believe it takes a certain type of committed, dedicated, intelligent, and resilient person to take 100% responsibility for their financial future and career as opposed to being a salaried employee under those who have already created the business, rules, and atmosphere.
