Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Stavros.
Christopher, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Babycakes has conceived 10 years ago in an old Craftsman Home in the heart of Hillcrest. We started as a coffee house and bakery and over the years added the restaurant and bar to our concept. We have been known to be one of the first bakeries in San Diego to specialize in cupcakes and have been riding the Cupcake Wave since 2007! We don’t only specialize in Cupcakes… Babycakes is quite popular in the birthday/celebration cake world by having consistent quality and creative design. And to top it off, we create about 500 wedding cakes every year and our wedding business seems to be growing rapidly simply by word of mouth!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a fun rollercoaster ride of peaks and valleys over the many years. Mostly peaks yet the valleys were just lessons learned by listening to our customers and adapting to ever-changing technology. We are a small business with only 2 working partners and trying to keep up with demand has been challenging yet it has also been validating. Our co-owner Rafael Del Rio is a workhorse and always puts quality and creative design first before quantity.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Babycakes – what should we know?
I act as the president of our company and responsible for the entire operation with a focus on Marketing and Operations. We have a great staff and that always helps. I am proud of our reputation and having a name that truly is known throughout the world. Crazy but true! I am shocked of our brand awareness in other cities, states, and countries. We are not just in the business to sell cake, we sell an experience and a feeling of celebration! It is quite magical and rewarding.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Rafael Del Rio my business partner and Pastry Chef for his dedication and talent. Also, Kaiko Kassab our Marketing Guru with Izumi Studios who has helped me with my crazy creative explosive mind. She can take my ideas and make them sparkle. Lastly, our staff has been remarkable. We are known for having a friendly and fun staff, you really cannot teach or train people to be friendly and fun. It is the personality and we always consider this in the interview process.
