Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Anderson .
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been artistic but, in a classic “me” move, I felt compelled to finish college before apprenticing as a tattooer because I was plagued by self-doubt regarding my ability to support myself with art alone. Though it would have been nice to start apprenticing immediately at 18, I’m glad I went to school because it gave me an outlook on the world I might not have been as concrete with if not for extensive research and writing on the topic of postmodern Latin American history. These concepts, along with my lifelong fascination with the strange, antique and morbid, continue to shape my art and gave me the final push to pursue tattooing. I’m so glad I did.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a tattooer, and I love anything that is traditional stylistically and creepy, dark or from the past. Weird is my favorite. I take inspiration from antique and vintage photographs, funerary practices, seedy history…. anything offputting. I have always love vice history, especially of the Victorian era through the 1950s and I feel that shows in my work. As hard as I try, some level of strange seems to come through in everything I do, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
In almost every case where I’ve met an artist I am inspired by they have been nothing but nice and helpful. I have never been sorry about reaching out. The internet, for better or worse, has at the least made networking with other artists much easier so it should be utilized in that regard to the fullest.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I currently tattoo in Long Beach, California and I am hoping to travel more over the next few years. I can easily be reached through email and Instagram. I have myriad paintings taking up space in a drawer at work, and I’m hoping to set up a website where they can be purchased.
