Meet Clara Wang of Glean & Glow in UTC/La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara Wang.

Clara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m the creator of Glean & Glow, a clean beauty, self-care, and lifestyle blog I launched in 2019. For more than a decade I struggled with cystic acne, skin irritation, and self-love. I tried everything the doctor prescribed and spent many more years testing countless skincare products, always searching for something that would treat all my insecurities. Stress, depression, and not taking care of myself brought me to a low point, but from there I began a journey to bring balance, love, and beauty back in my everyday life.

Once I made it my mission to improve my diet, said ‘yes’ to wellness and self-care, and found the right mix of products for my skin type, I was able to finally feel confident in my skin. For me, self love means taking care of yourself because you’re worth it.

With my background in photography and enthusiasm to share what I’ve gleaned from others, researched, and learned from personal experience, I created Glean & Glow. My mission is to invite other women to do more of the things that heal our bodies, bring health to our skin, and help us glow from the inside out.

Has it been a smooth road?
Launching a brand new blog in an already saturated market has its challenges and I often regret not starting it five years ago. But I can’t focus on the past or make excuses — everyone starts from somewhere. For me, finding a smaller niche in clean beauty and wellness makes it feel less competitive and writing about the topics I genuinely enjoy and love also keeps me motivated.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in clean beauty, which is one of the latest trends to hit the beauty market. Clean beauty is still open to interpretation, but most brands and experts use this phrase when they’re referring to products that don’t contain controversial ingredients. Cosmetics is a booming, multi-billion dollar industry, yet in the US it’s largely unregulated, and many products contain ingredients and chemicals that can be linked to skin irritation, allergies, and other issues. The clean beauty movement has me taking a closer look at what I put on my skin.

When I started taking better care of myself from the inside out, eating foods that nurture my body and skin, and living a more balanced lifestyle, I noticed a significant improvement in my complexion. Now, skincare is just as important as what I choose to eat.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
As a blogger in San Diego, I feel very lucky to live in a city where its easy to find likeminded women who are also fellow bloggers or skincare and clean beauty enthusiasts. Local shops like Shop Good and allow me to support local businesswomen who are creating their lines of clean beauty and wellness products in the market.
