Meet Clifford Pollard of Happy’s Party Rentals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clifford Pollard.

Hi Clifford, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I first thought about starting Happy’s Party Rentals, it wasn’t just about jumpers, tables, or tents — it was about creating moments. Like most people, I’ve been to parties where the setup was stressful, the rentals were late, or the equipment didn’t look the way it should. I wanted to change that experience for families in San Diego.

The idea started simple: what if there was a company that parents could count on to show up on time, with clean, safe, and fun equipment — and treat their child’s birthday like it was the most important event of the week? Because to that family, it really is.

With that in mind, I launched Happy’s Party Rentals. At first, it was just a couple of jumpers and some basic party gear. I was doing deliveries myself, talking with parents, setting up in parks, and learning what mattered most to customers. What I discovered was that people weren’t just renting inflatables — they were buying peace of mind. They wanted the setup to be easy, the prices to be fair, and the service to feel personal.

As the weeks turned into months, word started spreading. Friends told friends. Families booked us again for their next birthdays. Schools and churches began reaching out. Each event taught me how to improve — from offering different packages, to expanding into combo units and party extras, to making sure customer service was just as important as the equipment itself.

Today, Happy’s Party Rentals is proud to serve all of San Diego, bringing fun to backyards, schools, churches, and community events. But at its heart, the mission hasn’t changed: to make every event stress-free, joyful, and unforgettable.

Starting this company has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, because it’s more than rentals — it’s about helping families celebrate the moments that matter most.

So whether it’s a birthday party, school carnival, or community event, we’d love to help make your day a little brighter — and a lot more fun. That’s the Happy’s difference.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first started Happy’s Party Rentals, I didn’t have a warehouse full of inflatables or a big marketing budget. I had just a couple of jumpers, a truck, and a simple idea: families in San Diego deserved stress-free, reliable party rentals that were clean, safe, and affordable.

But the journey from that idea to a thriving business wasn’t easy.

In the beginning, I remember weekends where the phone didn’t ring at all. I had flyers in my car and spent afternoons walking through parks, talking to parents, and handing out cards — hoping that just one person would give me a chance. When I finally booked those first few rentals, it felt like a huge victory.

Even then, I realized quickly that this business came with challenges. Permits and park regulations in San Diego were confusing. I had to learn the hard way which locations required special permission and how to get insurance that satisfied the city. There were moments where the paperwork seemed endless, but I knew I couldn’t cut corners if I wanted families to trust me.

Then came the equipment challenges. A jumper might look simple, but it needs constant cleaning and careful handling. I’ll never forget the first time a seam ripped the night before an event — I spent hours patching it and testing it, determined that the kids at that party would never know there had been a problem. That experience taught me the importance of maintenance and preparation.

And as business slowly grew, I faced a new obstacle: balancing growth with customer service. It was exciting to get more calls, but I didn’t want to become the kind of company that treated customers like just another order. Every parent booking a jumper was planning an important day for their child, and I had to make sure that each one felt taken care of.

Those struggles shaped Happy’s Party Rentals into what it is today. They taught me resilience, problem-solving, and the value of putting customers first. Looking back, I’m grateful for every obstacle, because each one pushed me to improve.

Now, when I see kids laughing in a bounce house or families enjoying an event we helped make possible, I’m reminded why I started this in the first place. Happy’s Party Rentals isn’t just about equipment — it’s about creating memories, building trust, and being there for San Diego families when they celebrate the moments that matter most.

We’ve been impressed with Happy’s Party Rentals, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Happy’s Party Rentals began with a simple mission: to make celebrations easier, more fun, and completely stress-free for families in San Diego. From the very beginning, we focused on inflatables — bounce houses, water slides, and combo units that instantly transform a backyard or park into a party. What started with just a couple of jumpers has grown into a trusted local brand, known for reliability, safety, and customer care.

What sets us apart is how we treat each event. We know that when a parent books a jumper, it isn’t just equipment — it’s the centerpiece of a special day. That’s why we show up on time, every time, with clean, safe inflatables and a friendly team ready to help. Over the years, we’ve learned that the little things matter: clear communication, flexibility, and treating every booking like it’s the most important one of the week.

Today, we’re proud to be recognized for our professionalism and friendliness just as much as our inflatables. Families return to us year after year, schools and churches trust us with their community events, and word-of-mouth has built Happy’s into a name people rely on. More than anything, we’re proud that our work helps create memories — laughter, smiles, and moments that stick with families long after the party is over.

At Happy’s Party Rentals, we don’t just rent inflatables; we help bring joy to the people who matter most.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor and building a network has been one of the most valuable parts of growing my business. What’s worked well for me is starting small and being intentional. Early on, I realized I couldn’t figure everything out on my own, so I made a habit of reaching out to people who were already a few steps ahead of me. Sometimes that meant introducing myself to another local business owner after seeing their truck in my neighborhood, other times it meant connecting with people at community events or through small business groups online.

One piece of advice I’d give is not to overthink it — a mentor doesn’t always have to be a formal relationship. Sometimes it’s just a conversation with someone who’s been where you are, and if you stay curious and ask good questions, you can learn a lot. Networking has also been about showing up consistently. Whether that’s attending Chamber of Commerce mixers, supporting other small businesses in San Diego, or even just following up after meeting someone new, the little touches build real relationships over time.

What’s worked best for me is being genuine. Instead of approaching networking with “What can I get?”, I’ve tried to focus on “How can we support each other?” That mindset has led to mentors who offered advice without me even asking, and to referrals and collaborations that I never expected. If you’re willing to put yourself out there, stay curious, and be generous with your time, you’ll find the right people who can help guide you forward.
