Meet Cody Ruch of Spice Science in Golden Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Ruch.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cody. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is Cody Ruch, I am a musician who loves to cook. For most of 2015 I was a homebody and got to cook three meals a day. I love experimenting with different spices and blends to see how they affect flavor. Eventually, I found I was using a similar blend for almost everything, so i decided to make a large jar of it to speed up my prep for each meal. One day I was preparing a steak for myself and a friend and used my normal spice mix with a few different additions. We both took a bite, turned and stared at each other in disbelief, this was the best steak we’ve ever had!

He asked me if he could take some seasoning home, and I thought it would be a good idea to share my discovery. This was around the holidays so I figured, this would make a great gift! I made a large batch, packaged it, and handed it out to all my friends and family. Everyone loved it so much that by January I had strangers asking me how they could get more of this delicious spice someone had shared with them. Even my friends were asking to purchase more, so I started Spice Science to share my spices and blends easily with all of you!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a bumpy (but fun) road. I got denied some permitting, but instead got approved for a higher level of operation. Farmer’s markets were a great place to share my creation, but not profitable. I’ve had a lot of help from my good friends in finding a place to create my seasoning blends, design help, and marketing ideas. So, now I’m focusing on getting into San Diego’s local grocery stores.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Spice Science – what should we know?
I make seasoning blends and am known best for my flagship product, Cody’s Specialty Seasoning. I still surprise myself with how delicious it is on just about everything. I always found the popular spice blends and seasonings to be lacking just a little bit of flavor, so I created mine to give your tongue a symphony of different flavors that blend together perfectly.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My friends and family have been a huge help to me, providing a ton of support and an excellent sounding board to bounce ideas off of. Casey Gomez and Christian Dionela worked up my logos, and Jay Good has been helping with the displays. My mom suggested a salt-free version, so I put a No Salt Creole seasoning into the lineup. And of course, it helps to have everybody begging me for more when they run out!

Pricing:

  • My 4oz jars vary depending on which store you get them from, but they are usually around $10 or less
