Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Teran.
Colleen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Grace Kids Preschool was started in September, 2012 with 5 kids enrolled. Within one year we had 100 kids enrolled and by 2013 we had a waiting list.
Grace Kids Preschool is an early education center with a very clear well-rounded curriculum. We are not a daycare or a play center. With strong teacher direction, kids are prepared for success in entering kindergarten.
We follow a more teacher-directed philosophy of early education with specific parts of the day devoted to children choosing their own centers and activities. Progress reports are done each year as children progress through the program.
There has been very little advertising. Happy parents tell other parents and that has been one of the keys to our success.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
By running a quality program that stands out in the child care world, the enrollment grew at a steady pace. As the administrator/director, I have had years of experience in leading programs and I have a good handle on what parents are looking for. They want their kids to be loved and nurtured and directed towards learning. In that order.
Please tell us about Grace Kids Preschool.
Grace Kids Preschool is a faith-based center and we are owned and operated by Grace Church.
We specialize in a happy, loving environment for kids. Parents leave their children knowing that they will be loved and nurtured. Also, we teach Bible stories. We do not teach a religion. Parents love the values and character building that come from the Bible. Families from all different types of churches attend our program and we are very clear that their children will learn about God and how He created them. This sets us apart.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not much. We had a pretty successful launch. Within 3 months, we were meeting payroll and paying for our own supplies.
We have opened a second center in Spring Valley. The location does not provide the drive-by advertising that has been successful in North Park. The growth has been a little slower. However, within 6 months we have been able to meet payroll. We have grown by 15% since January 1st.

Sounds like a very successful school with a professional director that knows what she is doing.
