Today we’d like to introduce you to Consuelo Egan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Consuelo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is Consuelo Egan and I’ve lived in La Jolla since 1991 when I came to UCSD. I majored in Visual Art and worked at the craft center where I learned and taught jewelry smithing. I make original handcrafted jewelry under the name Made On Mars – a funky approach to jewelry that goes against the norm. Travel, music, the arts and my family influence my jewelry.
I’ve traveled with my family to Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Indonesia, and Hawaii. From these places I’ve found beads, stones, pearls, and sea glass that I mix into silver and gold creations. I appreciate the sounds of foreign music which inspires my jewelry to be different from the mainstream. Made On Mars is artistic jewelry that reflects my eclectic tastes. I strive to make each piece of jewelry to look and feel organic and not part of a mass-produced world.
Made On Mars is made to be accessible and fun to wear, it’s not diamond studded but also not disposable fashion jewelry. Made On Mars is heirloom quality jewelry which will make you smile for many years to come. I sell online with Etsy, or locally at the Misfit Gallery on Pearl Street.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve never had a problem creating jewelry and making new designs. But as Warhol said, business is an art too, and working to make a jewelry business is an exciting challenge.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Made On Mars is an artistic jewelry company that makes heirloom quality creations. I make matching lines of jewelry – pendants, rings, bracelets, and earrings – that mix semi-precious gemstones with silver and gold. All my jewelry is original designs that I handcraft here in San Diego.
One of the things that sets Made On Mars apart is the custom display case that I provide retailers to show my jewelry in the best light. It’s an interactive and fun display that elevates the buying experience and makes the jewelry purchase even more memorable.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is a great city, people come here to vacation, so why not bring home a memory such as a piece of Made On Mars jewelry? My focus isn’t on mainstream retail, so that can make sales more challenging. But it is also more rewarding to know that my customers appreciate quality jewelry that isn’t focused purely on bling, but more on art and originality.
For anyone starting out, I recommend learning the craft of metalsmithing. I find the actual process of making jewelry to be rewarding and I respect the craft. Many jewelry companies buy their parts to create a line, but that goes against what Made On Mars is about.
