Meet Corey Doggett of Morena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Doggett.

Corey Doggett

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my journey back in 2013 when I was 26 years-old and working full-time on a project management team. I had read that Personal Training was a great side gig since you could set your own hours, and since I was already a gym rat it felt like something I would enjoy. I studied, got certified, and spent the next two years working 60 hours a week; 40 in the office and 20 at the park with personal training clientele. After two years I decided that the cubicle life wasn’t for me and I plunged head first into personal training full-time in 2015. From day one I have done everything myself — no website design team, no marketing team, no assistance… just me. For the past four years I have been training out of Werk Fitness in the Morena neighborhood and have established a niche for golf performance in the fitness world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge was staying patient and determined. You can’t have five years worth of reviews and references without putting in five years of work. And during those first five years you are doing everything you can to get your name out there and get prospective clients to notice you. Growing the business and developing word-of-mouth was challenging and it took time, but that challenge comes with any entrepreneurial idea.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) Certified Trainer I specialize in functional fitness for sports performance, most specifically golf. Some of my clients play other sports and compete in triathlons, but primarily my niche is centered around golf performance. Programming for my recreational golf clients is focused around their golf swing (more specifically, their misses when they play golf) and any physical limitations they may be experiencing. There are drills and exercises that will address your sway, or loss of posture, or limited thoracic mobility, etc. I study your golf swing and I study your movements during exercise to then prescribe the best drills and exercises for you. With high caliber golfers I strictly assess the body and not the swing (at that skill level they already have that part figured out). My focus for all clients is to improve your mobility, your stability, and your power. We don’t bodybuild for aesthetics… we exercise for performance and longevity.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I am naturally a happy, positive person. The glass is always half full and never half empty. I truly enjoy teaching and encouraging others, which shines through during my training sessions. Being approachable and genuinely happy has been a huge part of my success.
