Meet Corey Villicana of Corey Villicana Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Villicana.

Corey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a natural light photographer living just north of San Diego. I’m a wife and the mother to two young boys. We live in a tiny little house with a gigantic yard, which both serve as my creative space and outlet. My work at home is never done; I like it that way. I began my photography business nearly ten years ago and consider myself extremely lucky to be able to photograph for others as well as support my maturing family, all while picking up and dropping off my boys from school, taking them to and from practice fields, and on and on. It’s a balancing act and we all play a part.

No two work days for me are ever the same. I set my own schedule, plan client meetings and create imagery continually, although like most creatives I have to be inspired to evoke my very best from myself.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been incredibly lucky throughout my career, having had the opportunities to be introduced to certain people or brands at opportune times- although I have also worked incredibly hard to establish myself in San Doings creative community. When I first started my business, social media didn’t yet exist so the only way to market yourself and your business was to literally knock on doors, introduce yourself and ask for people to take a chance on your talent.

That’s exactly what I did, and some of those first clients, are still some of my best.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Corey Villicana Photography is boutique photography business, I photograph families and infants, maternity and events, as well as a handful of weddings each year. I also have a lot of my time and talent applied to editorial photography, working for both small local businesses as well as huge cooperate clients. I would have to say that what I am most proudest of is the ability and opportunity to treat my clients as friends, to be able to serve them to the very best of my ability, whether they are a small startup with a following of 500 people or a well established brand with a following of 5 million people. It’s all the same in my eyes. I think that IS what sets me apart- my clients are my friends, I take the time to invest into the relationships in my life, be they personal or professional.

What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was much the same as I am today. I’ve always been artistic, interested in everything from arts and crafts to floral arrangement, photography, interior design etc. I danced for years while growing up, spent time singing with a multitude of choirs and show choirs and performed in local youth theatre groups. I think I’m pretty much the same person that I’ve always been, some things never change.
