Meet Cory Stier of Soda Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Stier.

Cory, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m the talent buyer / booker of a 21+ music venue in San Diego called Soda Bar. We also present shows at other venues around the city such as Casbah, Irenic, Belly Up, Music Box, Che Cafe, etc. I’ve been at the helm for about 7 1/2 years now – I love my job. I also do some other things such as release records under a name called Thrill Me Records and I’m a musician (drummer) for a few bands: Cults, Mrs. Magician, Hideout. I’m fortunate to do what I do.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Back in 2010, only months after starting as co-booker at Soda Bar, I broke my right arm (compound fracture) playing slow pitch softball. After emergency surgery the following day I ended up with a metal rod screwed into both my right Radius & Ulna bones as well as unbelievably expensive medical bills.

About 5 months later, my friends in the NYC indie-pop band Cults asked if I was available to hit the road with them after SXSW 2011 for a US tour which concluded with a performance at Coachella Music Festival. I took the gig without much thought but in hindsight it wasn’t the smartest decision as my arm wasn’t fully healed.

With about 5 shows left on the tour, I cracked the metal rod attached to my right Ulna bone which re-fractured the bone as well. I’m not sure how I got through those 5 aforementioned shows but it happened… woof!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Soda Bar is a live music / bar. We host shows for national / regional / local bands 6-7 nights a week. I’m proud to say we’re still going… all thanks for the support of the bands & San Diego music community. Soda Bar isn’t reinventing the wheel by any means but I’m proud of our amazing staff + promotions department.

What were you like growing up?
You’d have to ask my mom. I think I was the type of kid who tried to stick forks into electrical outlets… I liked sports and didn’t excel in school.
