Meet Courtney Montbrand of Craft Sass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Montbrand.

Courtney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When my first son was born at just 2lbs 9oz, I realized the road ahead and how drastically mine and my husband’s life was going to change. We made the decision for me to quit my day job so I could take care of our first born, and that’s when Craft Sass was born. I’ve always been creative and I absolutely love what I do. When I am in the shop working on orders I feel like I am taking our lives to another level of freedom. Being able to send out a message through my custom work, is very humbling as well. Many of my custom signs are very inspirational and meaningful. Opening my shop has taken a lot of dedication and hard work and sleepless nights. I was once told that all good businesses take about 5 years to become steady, I am in my 4th year and my growth charts are definitely proving that theory is correct. I told everyone from the beginning that I was going to turn this into a “real business”, I don’t think they took me seriously!

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any business could honestly say it has been a smooth road. There have been speed bumps, and I think there always will be. One struggle would be my supply inventory. You never know how many orders are going to pop up in a day and if I don’t have the supplies on hand, I find myself rushing around town with my 3 toddlers in tow trying to stock up last minute to ensure prompt delivery for my awesome customers. This issue has NEVER made an order late though. It’s just my own battle that I am constantly working on to improve.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Craft Sass – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I create a variety of items including custom wooden signs, t-shirts, coffee mugs, glasses, wreaths, decals, and party decorations. I specialize in custom wooden signs and custom t-shirts which are my two best sellers. My customers love that they can just send me any customization request and I can pretty much make it a reality and put my own touch on it. They have the confidence in me to spin it whatever way and they will be happy with it. I am most proud of the fact that I have taken such a small idea and turned into what it is today. Boy, do I have plans for it in the very near future too! I would say that my customer service sets me apart from others.

My customers are always sending me reviews and little messages complimenting the way that I personally interact with them. It’s humbling to see that I can put a smile on their face with my expertise and my personal communication with them.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that in just a few minutes, I can be walking on the beach. It takes all the pressures of owning a business away, allowing me to just detox and take my business to another level. There really isn’t much to not like about San Diego, so if anything, maybe traffic, though you can find that in any city!
