Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Scowby.
Courtney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
10 years ago I was working for an advertising and design company on the East Coast. I have loved drawing and creating my whole life and was so excited to have that as a career. A friend was getting married and I designed her wedding invitations and I was hooked. Advertising was fun but the expanse of creativity in the stationery industry really drew me in. I moved back to San Diego, where I had grown up, and started working with wedding coordinators and their clients.
Brightly Designed was created out of that. A new love for creating unique and custom designs for each event tailored to the bride and grooms life and the new journey they were starting as husband and wife. I now still design custom wedding suites, day of paper goods and stationery for all of life’s other celebrations – birthdays, new babies, and any other event my clients are putting on!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With any business, there have been ups and downs. Some clients just aren’t the right fit, sometimes I make mistakes, printers make mistakes, the post office loses a package, etc…… all the normal things that can happen since we are all human! But I do take pride in doing everything I can to remedy any situation as quickly as possible and always make sure we are ahead of things with the organization and triple checking projects.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Brightly Designed story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in custom paper goods for weddings and events. My business is about 75% weddings, 15% other events like birthday, babies and family events, and 10% corporate clients. I am known for making each event specifically tailored to each client. I work closely with coordinators to make sure my products are a perfect addition to the design of the event.
I am proud of my creativity and my ability to take on all kinds of projects. I make invitations, menus, custom backdrops, signage, and just about anything that we can dream up. Everything I make is hand touched whether is it tearing paper, hand cutting shapes, gold leafing details, or creating custom illustrations.
I can handle all details of a wedding – designing logos, cake toppers, wooden signs, custom fabrics and photo walls just to name a few – which really creates a sense of cohesion for the event since all items are created by the same designer. I also really value quality and have built relationships with amazing vendors that provide me with top-notch printing, hand dyed ribbons, vintage postage and so much more!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel as if I have been graced with a lot of good luck in my business. The relationships that have been built in this industry have been imperative to my success. The wedding industry truly is a community.
