Anthony and Nell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2016, we had a random discussion one day about hats and what they meant to us. From our love of sports to reminiscing about childhood memories through old photos, we realized hats played such an important part in our lives. Coming up with an idea to easily clean a hat had never crossed our minds until then.
With our backgrounds in the legal field and numerous resources at our disposal, we were able to navigate through the process of making our idea a reality. In 2018, after two and a half years of trial and error and finding the right name that we thought would convey our message, Crown Wipes was established.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
By no means has it been a smooth road. Starting a company isn’t easy but creating a cleaning solution intended for hats but one that would be sensitive to all skin types was probably the most difficult part of the process. Also issues of fraying, discoloration, staining, and loss of shape were major concerns that we had to tackle in choosing the type of fibers used in our wipes. It was a meticulous process but we took our time and did the research. We found a chemist that met our needs and proceeded with caution while slowly gaining enough capital to get the business off the ground. Taking out a business loan was not an option for us. I’d suggest to anyone if at all possible, do not borrow money from a financial institution to start a business. We are one of the lucky few in this regard.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We would focus more on marketing and google analytics because we are an online retail and doing those things would drive so much traffic to our website. Lesson learned we are moving in the right direction for our online sales worldwide.
