Meet Cyndi Gardipee of WonderLab SD in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyndi Gardipee.

Cyndi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been in the hair industry for 14 years now. I started working in a busy salon in La Jolla where I learned the fundamentals of haircutting and coloring. This industry has so much to offer and so many different career paths to go. I have worked on fashion shows, photoshoots, music videos, tv pilots, educated, and worked weddings and special events all while also working behind the chair. While all these things were fun and educational, my passion is working with clients behind the chair and making handmade items. Last October, I opened my own studio in Mission Valley. I retail KEVIN.MURPHY products, handmade hair items, and work on clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
Building your own business isn’t always easy. I wear so many hats and I have to learn a lot by trial and error. My job is so much more than working with client, it’s: marketing, maintaining social media, keeping up on taxes, networking, keeping up on education and more. Sometimes, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done which can be the hardest part of my career.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with WonderLab SD – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
At the studio, I perform hair services: haircuts, coloring, balayage, hair extensions, Brazilian Blowout, HED Gravity Keratin, conditioning and treatment services as well as special event styling. At the studio, I carry KEVIN.MURPHY hair care products and handmade items including: hair combs, clips, hairpins, dream catchers, candles, earrings and seasonal items. The name WonderLab embraces wonder and creativity. I love trying new things and learning new techniques. In the logo you’ll notice the “O” is a dream catcher and the “L” is a feather which illustrates my Native American heritage and represents my Blackfeet tribe. They just started using ocean waste plastic for their bottles as well. Taking care of the environment is huge to me and I hope by the end of the year to be a part of Green Circle Salons. Green Circle recycles our salon waste to help lessen our industry’s carbon footprint.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about our city is that there’s so much to explore. You can spend the morning hiking around mission trails and then the afternoon laying on the sand in Ocean Beach. I love living in such a beautiful place and trying to find new things to do and see that I haven’t before. My least favorite part of San Diego would have to be the traffic!
