Today we’d like to introduce you to Damaris Ortiz.
Hi Damaris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Entrepreneur since I was little, lover of serving my neighbor and faithful believer that we do not have to take life so seriously.
Although I come from a super dysfunctional family (I lived with my mom, dad and stepmother in the same house) like many people in Mexico and with financial limitations, it was not an impediment to believe in myself and in what I could create and leave for my future generations…
I have a degree in international business and a diploma in nutrition, which have been tools that have helped me establish and grow as an entrepreneur.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In the beginning, there was a struggle in the financial area like many ventures, but as the business has grown, it has ceased to be an obstacle.
The biggest obstacle for an entrepreneur is to believe negative thoughts about themselves or their business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Abbas House?
It all started in April 2016 with only $200 dlls. One of my dreams has always been to open a coffee shop, and that’s what I wanted to do for almost three years, but with that amount of money that I had, it was going to be very difficult, so I decided to make a product that would carry the brand and start my business with what I had.
I knew I wanted to create a nutritious snack (due to the trend and its simple preparation) to start the project but I didn’t know what. So for two months, I was testing different ingredients and nothing came out. You may or may not believe the next part, but that’s how it happened… One day I got desperate and started crying and I literally yelled at God and said: “Why don’t you give me an idea!” and in my mind I heard “Well ask me” and I said “Well, give it to me” haha and at that moment of crying so much I fell into a deep sleep and while I slept I could see how I created my first product, the amaranth bar with chocolate and coffee. That was how Abba’s House started.
Later, thanks to the fact that I decided to believe in the project, the brand was chosen to participate with the amaranth bar in a program sponsored by the White House called Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) in 2017, where I won 4th place among 250 entrepreneurs from all over Latin America. Giving us entry into the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) in Hyderabad, India. In 2019 I also participated in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) Science and Technology Contest in La Serena, Chile.
We currently have two other flavors of Hannah bars, an amaranth protein powder, vegan supplements, artisanal coffee and organic matcha in Abbas House and we open our first store called Abbas Wellness Market where you can find our products and other organic, vegan, sugar-free, keto products and a healthy shake bar.
I would also like to share that every time you buy some of our products, you help a Rehabilitation Center in Tijuana for girls between 13-18 years old since a percentage of the profits go to this organization. What why do we do it? For the simple fact of love.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I want to thank God because of the amazing dream that I received and for being so faithful. My Husband Manuel Marquez who has helped me from the beginning.
Also, I´m so thankful for the faithfulness of our clients and distributors.
