Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Fulkerson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to San Diego from Boise, Idaho to attend SDSU for my undergraduate studies. After finishing at SDSU, I attended both California Western School of Law and SDSU and received both my JD and MBA degrees. Upon graduation, I began working at a local law firm. Within a year I was the managing attorney and also handled most of the marketing for the firm. I am proud to say we doubled in both clients and settlements every year for 5 consecutive years.
After handling over five thousand personal injury cases, I decided it was time to open my own firm to show there is a better way to run a personal injury law practice. In April 2016, myself and Attorney Paul Batta started Batta Fulkerson Law Group. I am proud to say that in 18 months we have grown to a staff of 16 including 6 attorneys. We only handle injury claims and we only take specific cases as we never want to sacrifice quality for quantity.
The downfall of most injury firms is that they try to sign up as many cases as possible and then they neglect the majority and only focus on the really valuable cases. It’s called a mill and it is the wrong way to practice law. We only take the number of cases we can handle the right way. Our clients come first and that philosophy is one of the reasons we have become one of the biggest personal injury law firms in San Diego.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life is not smooth. I have found that the key is accepting that. When I decided it was time to take the leap and start a law firm, it was the scariest thing I had ever done in my life. With no safety net, it is either sink or swim and we swung for the fence and thank God we made great contact. But that doesn’t mean that the beginning was smooth. We had no office, no staff, no computers… you get the point. Starting a business is overwhelming.
Fortunately, we were able to bring on some amazing people in the early days and the rest started to fall into place. My law partner and I did not take a paycheck or salary for the entire first year of the practice as we knew that in order to build the foundation we wanted it was critical to reinvest every dollar back into the business. Sometimes you have to tighten your belt of the best interest of the long-term goal.
Batta Fulkerson Law Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Batta Fulkerson is a full service, boutique, personal injury law practice. We focus on car accidents, motorcycle accidents, and dog bite cases. We have a team of 6 attorneys and a ten-person support staff that consists of law clerks and paralegals. Our head litigation attorney is Edward Meara who was the in-house counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance company for over tens years and has been handling injury cases for over twenty years.
In addition, our attorneys and staff combine to speak 7 different languages so we are able to help the vast majority of clients in their native tongue. Our staff and attorneys are what makes Batta Fulkerson different than other law firms. We all love what we do and we love that we get to do it together. It is a fun and light spirited work environment and we all feel so blessed to be able to help so many amazing people.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think the best thing that can come from finding financial success at a young age is the realization that at a certain point, money does not add anything to your “happiness” level. That perspective is priceless. Success to me is doing what you love every day and making sure that you have an impact in this world and the lives of others.
Waking up every day with a smile, charged up to be able to do what you do is a blessing that I do not take for granted. It really is true that if you find what you love to do, you will never work another day in your life.
