Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan and Jaclyn Mayer.
Dan, a former US Marine, and a competitive cyclist is a self-taught bike mechanic that built bikes and wheels for many elite cyclists and triathletes in San Diego. With his knack for engineering, he started making furniture as a hobby almost 15 years ago. One of his signature pieces was a standing height desk that a few of his athlete friends requested.
Dan and Jaclyn met in 2011, shortly after Dan was diagnosed with a rare skin disease that caused this health to be an on-going roller coaster. Through that roller coaster, he missed a very important, sporadically occurring symptom and on Friday, June 13, 2014, Dan suffered a pulmonary embolism while riding his bike.
Though he didn’t know what happened at the time and barely made it home, he proposed to Jaclyn that same night. As his health spiraled over the weekend, an emergency hospital trip saved his life a second time having caught the blood clot from breaking again. Fortunately, Dan made a full recovery with time.
When Dan and Jaclyn married in 2015, he was on his way to replacing all of their old furniture with custom pieces he made for their home. During this period, Dan really started to expand his talents as he experimented and pushed his craftsmanship boundaries. Dan and Jaclyn also got a taste of working together and collaborating on ideas.
Two months after Dan and Jaclyn married, Dan was laid off from his job in the cycling industry. With no time to waste, Jaclyn started pitching his craftsman skills to those she knew in the business community. Not long after, Clever Collective was born upon receiving their first order for 6 custom, adjustable, standing-height desks.
Since then, Dan has continued to expand his portfolio of furniture for offices and homes, making everything custom as the client requires. From dressers and benches to barrel furniture, to movable bars, reception desks.

Clever Collective creates custom, handcrafted, home and office furniture that offers clever designs to complement specific needs and styles. We explore the client’s vision, we refine it, we source materials, and we build it. As a husband and wife team, we divide and conquer. Dan as the designer and builder, Jaclyn as administration, project management, and business development.
We are known for having an industrial look using a mix of metals and woods that is engineered for practicality.
We are most proud of the evolution and progress we’ve made in the 3.5 years of operation. We’ve let the market demand naturally determine the product focus.
