Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Cahill.
Dana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About 20 years ago I was the manager of a gym in NY. I realized that being around all the trainers and people that that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to train people. I wanted to teach the whole person, not just put them through a routine of exercises. Over the years I and my practice has evolved into “DC healthyfit .” It’s about physically getting strong as well as mentally and nutritionally. I love what I do, I love making individualized workout plans and really helping my client develop strength physically and mentally. It means different things for different people which is why each workout and program is tailored for each individual. It’s not one size fits all.
In 2007 I trademarked my labor of love, a class called “Ride and Glide.” This class utilizes the gravity training system equipment and spin bikes. On our website, F-maxfitness.com you can view the video clip of my class. It’s 90-second intervals on the spin bike and strength training exercises on the gravity machine. It’s fun and fast and brings amazing results. I absolutely LOVE teaching this class. I love my students and love how my business has evolved. I train everyone from 19 years old to 75 years old! It’s my passion and my goal to help people live happier!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was a smooth transition initially. But when I moved from NYC (where I grew up) to San Diego in 2005 it was really difficult to start all over. I sold my very lucrative training business there to move out here. I worked 3 different gyms and a chiropractor office job until I was able to develop a steady clientele. I met my husband, Donato Malavarca in 2007, he HAPPENED to own a gym, F-max fitness. I did not know this when I first met him. We then joined forces and have grown our gym community over the years. Our clients are like our extended family.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
What we do is one on one personal training as well as the gravity classes. We have a well-versed group of trainers and we constantly strive to raise our standard of training. What I am most proud of is the loyalty of our clients, the amazing results that feel and the longevity of our company.
What sets us apart from others is that we do not follow fitness fads. We use methods of weight training and core work based on anatomy, science and individuals ability. We really do care about each and every person that comes through that door.
What were you like growing up?
I was extremely outgoing. I was always trying to help people and I loved having fun. I also was a perfectionist in the sense that when I did something it had to be right. I loved music, dance and horseback riding.
